Doren and Photography: A Rich Visual Experience
By Vicki Craven
In her new book, High Point University professor Cherl Harrison brings together a varied group of visual artists, both well-known and obscure, with high-quality images and supporting biographies. Most notable of those is Arnold Doren, her teacher, mentor and friend. Harrison reveals Doren as a quietly demanding, painstaking perfectionist who taught by example, as his own photographs illustrate. After a turbulent upbringing, Doren found his center through the lens of a camera and spent his life sharing that profound experience with his friends and students. Harrison taps into the photographer’s eye, as she takes the reader on a visual narrative through Doren’s work from the 1960s to 2000, illustrating his tenacious hold on the spirit of those decades.

Her vision expands in the second part of the book to reveal further insight into this gifted artist through his eclectic collection of photographs that weave the language of life across decades and around the globe. The depth and breadth of these images challenge both the professional and the novice art appreciator.

In addition to the actual photographs, Harrison spent seven years researching and gleaning facts about the life and accomplishments of the 59 photographers whose works are included in the book. Her correspondence with the photographers themselves, spouses, children and co-workers of those who are deceased, curators in major museums, and archives for obituaries resulted in interesting, often little-known facts about these men and women worthy of perusal.

In Doren and Photography Harrison provides a rich gallery for reflection on life’s mysteries and metaphors. The photographs, many of them gelatin silver prints, are beautifully reproduced, some breathtakingly so, as illustrated by the cover image. I recommend readers experience what Harrison offers.

Doren and Photography - A Volume to Cherish
By Lorran Meares
In Doren and Photographs, Cherl Harrison eloquently and reverently honors her mentor Arnold Doren, photographer, teacher, and a passionate collector with a highly refined aesthetic, albeit eclectic taste, and an egalitarian sensibility. His acquisitions included not only works of celebrated photographers, but also imagery by individuals who he admired: fellow artists and colleagues in his neighborhood.

Following her deeply personal imperative to publish a book unveiling Doren’s selective process and collected works from an academic perspective, Harrison also responds to her strong conviction that this worthwhile endeavor is also a necessary project.

Beginning with her opening passage and sustained throughout, Harrison’s curatorial and editing choices sensitively reflect her deep respect and love for this eccentric collector of the photographic experience.

The reproduction quality is excellent, and the representational selections give us a window into the world of the perfectionist teacher. Doren, no doubt, would have held Harrison’s tribute close to his heart and said so very softly, “This is perfect!”

This is a volume to cherish.

Breathtaking Images
By Judy Isaksen
In Doren and Photography High Point University Art Professor Cherl Harrison exquisitely honors her professor, mentor and friend, Arnold Doren, while simultaneously giving voice to not only Doren’s photography but also the images of those whom he admired and collected. Harrison begins with an intimate biography of Doren, articulating the ways in which the late 1960s-early1970s—including the Anti-War, Feminist, and Civil Rights Movements—were a major source of his artistic inspiration. Doren’s photography of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, including his photo of Jimi Hendrix which is included in this collection, was possibly the apex of his career as a young photographer.

Working from Doren’s archive that included images of his and others from 1840 to 2003, Harrison compiles an emotionally breathtaking collection that includes the works of photojournalists, botanists, film makers, surrealists, men, and women who hail from not only the USA but also from Puerto Rico, Italy, Japan, Africa, as well as other global corners. Most impressively, 45 images have never been previously published. One can easily see the great care Harrison took in her placement of facing images, in terms of lighting, mood, tone, and emotion.

Perhaps as joyful as the final product is the process that Harrison undertook. This labor of love spanned a period of seven years as she meticulously culled these select photographs from Doren’s vast collection of over 100,000 photographs, and then researched the history of each, offering the reader a peak into the history of the image and the photographer.

In a world of instantaneous selfies and digitally posted images, Harrison’s new book, Doren and Photography, is a rich collection of eclectic photographs that speaks to a variety of audiences: professional photographers, university libraries and students, and the novice art aesthete.
