Due to their expertise and assistance with this population, we have implemented a dementia program in our own facility, and have found significant improvement with our elders with dementia. Since the program's inception, all staff have reported less falls, more engaged elders, increased meaningful activities and structure, and increased compliance with eating. Peggy Watson M.S., CCC-SLP and Nancy Shadowens M.S., CCC-SLP are practicing speech-language pathologists. Watson & Shadowens are published, present nationally and internationally to therapists and caregivers on the topic of dementia behavior management. They are co-authors of two books, one for therapists, Dementia Therapy and Program Development, and one for caregivers, Dementia: Loving Care with a Therapeutic Benefit. Working together, they have established a highly successful approach to managing dementia induced behavior that incorporates evidence-based strategies unique to individuals with dementia to improve their lives and restore balance to their living environment.
