Four people with radically different outlooks on the world meet on a train and start talking about what they believe. Their conversation varies from cool logical reasoning to heated personal confrontation. Each starts off convinced that he or she is right, but then doubts creep in.
In a tradition going back to Plato, Timothy Williamson uses a fictional conversation to explore questions about truth and falsity, and knowledge and belief. Is truth always relative to a point of view? Is every opinion fallible? Such ideas have been used to combat dogmatism and intolerance, but are they compatible with taking each opposing point of view seriously? This book presupposes no prior acquaintance with philosophy, and introduces its concerns in an accessible and light-hearted way. Is
one point of view really right and the other really wrong? That is for the reader to decide.

Review
"Tetralogue has an abundance of merits. It is lively and frequently incisive. It pursues several important philosophical issues efficiently and without remaining on well-trodden ground. It does not require any academic background. It could contribute usefully to undergraduate courses that address any of its topics." --Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews Online

The transition from pure contradiction to rational argument (if not genuine understanding)
By K. A. I. Siddiqui
In the age of the internet, we have all seen it a dozen times: Traditionalists, relativists, advocates of logical thinking and advocates of the scientific worldview at loggerheads, wondering how seemingly rational beings can start with first principles that are apparently at odds with each other to such a degree.
In the wild, we see each of these factions routinely misjudging the level of credibility that the other positions ought to command if they were evaluated in a sober light. Timothy Williamson, a professor of philosophy at Oxford University presents a dialogue between idealized representatives of each of these four factions.
These characters may seem like exaggerated caricatures, but in this work, their function is to present each position in its ideal purity even if this requires them to behave like robots so that we can evaluate their statements fairly without being distracted by attempts at hedging or dilution. If you want to participate in or follow debates of this nature, then you might want a glimpse into what analytic philosophy in its contemporary state thinks would be a fair evaluation of each.
If that is what this book attempts to be, does it succeed? Considering its size, I think it does a good job at covering a surprisingly large fraction of the basic fallacies and misunderstandings that are pervasive in these debates. However, I do not think this book presents each position in THE strongest possible light. Whether the author was concerned about the book becoming too long or whether I'm deluding myself, the fact is that even I am able to think of ways to make the arguments stronger.
Having said that, I really enjoyed the book and I strongly hope Prof. Williamson and other professional philosophers would write more books that reach out to laymen like me.

Quick read but full of interesting stuff
By NC
Anyone who has taught freshmen philosophy courses will understand the type of discussions and points of view in this book. Or anyone who has had philosophical conversations with people in that age group will likely be familiar with it. Williamson is quite well known among philosophers as he is a leading contemporary figure in epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophical logic.
As the name suggests, it is a dialogue between four individuals who all have very different philosophical points of view. One tends to hold a rather naive scientific realism, another a naive relativism, and a third who relies on a purely logical point of view and finally one who has a view that is rather superstitious (believes in curses and witch magic).
The dialogue beautifully and clearly illustrates the differences and the pros and cons of each side in colloquial language. Though they tended to have rather simplistic viewpoints at first, as they argue with each other, they develop more nuanced thinking. Though none of them actually changes their views in the end, they do come away more enriched by this critical exercise.
It would make a good intro textbook for general philosophy. There are also rather interesting novel arguments which I had never read about or heard of (I was a philosophy major) so I actually learned something new. I also found parts of it quite entertaining and funny (though I cannot be sure Williamson intended it to be funny).
