About the Author
John Wyndham is the pen name of John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris (1903–1969), the son of an English barrister. The boy’s parents separated when he was eight, and after attending various boarding schools, he lived off family money while trying his hand—unsuccessfully—at careers such as law, commercial illustration, and advertising. In 1924 he turned to writing, and within a number of years he was selling short stories, mostly science fiction, to pulp magazines in America, as John Beynon or John Beynon Harris. During World War II, he served behind the lines in the British army, and in 1951 he published The Day of the Triffids, his first novel as John Wyndham, to tremendous success. Wyndham’s six other novels include The Kraken Wakes and The Midwich Cuckoos, and The Chrysalids (published as an NYRB Classic).

Margaret Atwood is the author of more than forty books of fiction, poetry, and critical essays, including the 2000 Booker Prize–winning The Blind Assassin; Alias Grace, which won the Giller Prize and the Premio Mondello; The Robber Bride, Cat’s Eye, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Penelopiad. Her latest work is a book of short stories called Stone Mattress: Nine Tales (2014).� Her newest novel, Madd�Addam (2013) is the third in a trilogy comprising The Year of the Flood (2009) and the Giller and Booker Prize–nominated Oryx and Crake (2003). Atwood lives in Toronto with the writer Graeme Gibson.

Wyndham is brilliant, every time he goes out.

Another triumph by the greatest British science-fiction writer (sorry Aldis, you don't compete; & Clarke is a purely international phenomenon) This is later in his body of work, dating to 1968 (he died in '69), but carries the same authority, the same questions, the same hope for the future as his other works of the second flowering of his talent, that dating from the fifties and sixties, when he wrote as John Wyndham and not Benyon Harris or some other variation from his name. Chocky is, apparently, a being from another planet, star system, galaxy even, who is able to communicate by mind with a young boy ~ the protagonist's son. Naturally, the alien culture, science, technology, civilisation are all well in advance of ours; Chocky's task is to be a teacher, to guide us into a more mature use of the Earth and, especially, x-x-x-x-x ~ a power system based on the interstellar radiation ~ which will enable us to develop properly. Unfortunately, for her task, Chocky becomes emotionally involved where she ought to be detached, and her mission is, this time, a failure. Wyndham's interest is not so much the story, though that is fascinating, but the ideas behind the story, and, more particularly, the questions raised by the suppositions of the plot. What would happen if a child heard a voice from outside itself? Why can mind not be cast across space since, as Chocky points out, it is massless and maybe not subject to the terminal velocity of light? And, though this is a secondary question, can there be points of contact between alien species? Wyndham's answer appears to be that at least one such point might be art, a curious suggestion. � Elsie Wilson, 2002.

All in the mind?

John Wyndham was a great writer. But you knew that already. "Chocky" was one of his last (and one of his best) books.
The narrator is David. He and his wife Mary are worried parents. Their adopted young son Matthew has developed a habit of talking to himself. Matthew asks strange questions, the kind that children wouldn't normally ask. He becomes good at things in which he previously had no great ability.
And then Matthew mentions Chocky. For David and Mary it looks as if Matthew's "imaginary friend" is growing more and more influential, driving Matthew further away from reality. Matthew is frustrated because Chocky really exists. Chocky is an invisible entity from another planet. She uses Matthew as an interpreter while she studies our planet.
This book was made into a children's programme, and inspired two more spin-offs. "Chocky" is a book about growing up, friendship, and the pain of saying goodbye. The end of the book is particularly touching. This is a book people should read at school.

A suprising "first contact" story

Eleven-year-old Matthew Gore appears to have an inquisitive imaginary friend of uncertain gender named Chocky. Matthew's adoptive parents become concerned when Matthew's teacher reports that Matthew has started doing math in base two instead of base ten. Their concern increases when his art teacher notices a sudden improvement in Matthew's drawing ability. Matthew attributes those newfound skills to Chocky. The question soon becomes whether Chocky is imaginary or whether Matthew is communicating with an internal consciousness separate from his own. Chocky's impact on Matthew's life quickly turns the Gore family's life into a circus. The last portion of the novel resembles a mystery and the conclusion is quite satisfactory.

Chocky is a relatively short novel that lacks the scope and drama of Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, but it is an enjoyable read in its own right. Matthew's reaction to Chocky and his parents' reaction to Matthew create a believable family dynamic -- particularly with the addition of Matthew's little sister Polly, who adds a note of comic relief. Chocky is a clever and surprisingly credible version of a first contact story, one that nicely balances the ideas that make science fiction worthwhile with the carefully constructed characters that define good literature. I would give Chocky 4 1/2 stars if Amazon made that option available.

Outstanding - a book that opens many doors.

I've had this book for years, and keep coming back to it. Many books define fuzzy numbers in various ways, and hint at combining them with some kind of arithmetic. Kaufmann and Gupta actually carry out those operations. Since fuzzy addition is a kind of convolution, they also show why fuzzy subtraction does not reverse the operation - deconvolution does. If you want to use fuzzy arithmetic for constraint propagation, this changes the basic nature of backwards propagation.
I just wish the author's clarity had extended a little farther into the mechanics of the various kinds of convolution. They handle discrete cases only, and offer about the least readable presentation of convolution that I've ever seen.
I'm not a theoretician, so I appreciate the book's clarity and examples. It is so clear and thorough that I refer to it for ideas quite unrelated to fuzzy arithmetic. If a sign of a great book is the number of unrelated topics that it clarifies, then this title is very good indeed.
This title may not suit the beginner and may not suit the expert. For us in the middle, though, it is incredibly helpful.

Too many errors, not enough content

Although the intent of this text is laudable - to introduce the concepts of fuzzy arithmetic to engineers, and provide certainty in understanding through examples - the execution of the work is terrible. Only the most fundamental of the concepts is communicated with clarity, due to a general sloppiness in writing style, poor mathematical presentation, and lack of logic in some of the "proofs" that are presented.

The technical content of the book could have been presented in less than 20 pages out of the 315. The rest is overstuffed with repetitive and rather trivial examples presented in unnecessarily drawn out detail. The real demise of this work, however, is in the unfathomable number of typographical errors that occur throughout the book. I would estimate there are at least 2 or 3 such errors PER PAGE. This renders the usefulness of the excruciatingly detailed examples very questionable.

The presentation of the mathematical concepts is poorly done, often through a stumbling writing style. In more than one instance, a "theorem" is given "proof" by simply re-stating the theorem and declaring that it has been proven. I understand that this is not meant to be a "theoretical" book, in which case I would have accepted a statement of the theorem without proof, but a non-proof should not have been included.

In a few instances (introductions to chapters) the authors attain moments of clarity using a more verbose writing style. Particularly in trying to explain the nature of fuzzy numbers and their difference from random numbers it is clear that the authors are communicating something of importance. Unfortunately, once past the introductions, these themes are not further developed.

Did I learn from reading this book? Yes, I did learn a good deal about fuzzy arithmetic despite the nature of the work, and yes, I can see that portions of the book can be used as future reference to understand details in the arithmetic operations on fuzzy numbers. However, I think any novice student is going to be at a loss to obtain a firm understanding of the subject from this presentation.

The style of this book is excellent in that it gives you plenty of examples of how fuzzy arithmetic works. Honestly, I doubt there exists a more comprehensive book on fuzzy arithmetic around.
You'll find information on fuzzy numbers and their basic arithmetic, how alpha cuts work in fuzzy arithemtic, type-two fuzzy numbers, probabilisitic-fuzzy hybrid numbers, fuzzy modular arithmetic, combinatorics with fuzzy numbers, and an application of fuzzy arithmetic to catastrophe theory. And more, of course.
If you can find a copy, get it immediately. The explanations are clear, the reasoning is thorough, and the examples carefully illustrate the ideas. Steal this book!

I've got a copy of this from way back when (I learned to play piano as a kid in the 1950's and it was old even then) and the cover as well as some of the pages had gone missing. It is exactly the same and offers well known pieces in fairly easy arrangements and makes a wonderful addition to your sheet music collection.

An excellent collection of music worth playing

I bought Piano Pieces for Children on the recommendation of my piano teacher who told me not to be troubled by the name. She's right, saying it is for children makes it sound... well, childish. But these pieces are anything but. None of them are dumbed down for easy playing, they are just well selected and arranged and graded (i-IV) so you can find work at the appropriate level. Most importantly, the music is not boring. I'm personally a fan of classical music and want to play so that I can experience this music in a more intimate manner - playing exercises that are designed to be nothing more than exercises would drive me crazy. I highly recommend this for anyone learning to play and who is hoping to develop a fun, interesting repertoire. Also, find a good teacher to help you. I tried teaching myself for years, but I've made more progress in a few weeks under the guidance of a teacher than I did in years on my own.

Print is too small for older eyes and too crowded for many children.

As another reviewer wrote, there is too much wasted white space in this printing, which forces the notes too close together and it is intimidating to children. More practiced adults would have a difficult time without reading glasses, in many cases. And, perhaps only two out of 10 songs were easy enough for our children just learning how to play chords with accidentals, etc. But we would have kept it had the printing not been too small.

An admirable treatment of the subject

This book is part of a useful series of, at present, sixteen attractively produced volumes published by the J. Paul Getty Museum, with other titles like "Music in Art", "Gardens in Art" etc. The title of this volume is slightly misleading: a more accurate title would have been "Illness and Medicine in Art", for many illustrations deal with diseases and disabilities without any reference to medical treatment (and a small number seem to me to have no connection with either, e.g. The Fall of Icarus). However, there are plenty of images about treatment, from medieval times to the present, and a good many of them are by artists who are not at all well-known. The text with the images refers to the illness and the treatment, about which we can learn a lot, and also often to the technical means used by an artist to highlight certain parts of the picture. The images are small, but clear, and the colour is excellent. The print is necessarily very small and will be a strain on some eyes.

A picture is worth a thousand words

This very interesting book uses works of art to illustrate themes in medicine such as disease, suffering and the physician. It is useful for thinking about or teaching humanities and medicine, narrative medicine and the history of medicine. I have used it as a source book for teaching medical students and residents and find that it encourages discussion by offering vivid examples of what can be abstract concepts.

deceptive title

Only the best known and studied paintings are thoroughly analyzed. Many repetitive examples of small things. I was dissapointed by not finding more examples of different ilnesses that we know there should be thousands of examples in paintings and sculptures all over the world. the medicine and science are neglected in the explanations.

Fantastic!

Being one of the first books based on .NET Core, the author does a really great job on illustrating the design and more advanced topics such as resiliency of microservices. This book helped me and my colleagues greatly when we were redesigning our legacy systems. The examples are clear, to the point and on top; use the latest open-source technologies to demonstrate the subject matter including .NET Core, Nancy, Polly etc.

One final note is that this book is NOT about Nancy as some may think. As the title clearly states, it's about Microservices and illustrates the subject-matter using Nancy examples.

Overall, this is a fantastic book that must have its place in your bookshelf!
