First published as a second edition in 1989, Socialist Planning presented a fully revised and updated edition of a book that had established itself as the standard introductory text on the economics of socialist planning. It was intended to provide the reader with a grasp of the theoretical ideas and empirical knowledge that explain the historical experience of socialist planning, problems in the state socialist countries of the late eighties, and the comparative efficiency of socialist planning and market capitalism. While the structure of the second edition remained basically unchanged each chapter incorporated empirical evidence of the changes that took place since the mid-seventies, along with the ideological developments related to these changes. The book will remain valuable, primarily for its historical interest, but also for its combination of theory and practice, the analytical perspective and careful selection of material, and in the attention paid to analyses by politicians and economists from the socialist countries themselves.

About the Author
Michael Ellman is Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is the author, co-author and editor of numerous books and articles on the Soviet and Russian economies, on transition economics, and on Soviet economic and political history. In 1998, he was awarded the Kondratieff prize for his 'contributions to the development of the social sciences'.
Deane is Professor of Economic History in the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Newnham College.
Joan Robinson was trained as an illustrator and began writing her own stories in 1939. Her many books for children include the Mary-Mary series, and, for older children, classic novels such as When Marnie Was There and Charley. Working closely with her husband, Joan Robinson published over thirty books before her death in 1988. Her most enduringly popular character, Teddy Robinson, first appeared in print in 1953. 'His adventures might happen to anyone's teddy bear,' said his creator 'but his way of looking at them is his own.' This collection of stories has been selected by the author's daughter, the original Deborah, and proud owner of the real Teddy Robinson.
