an agonistic viewpoint
By Goggle-Eyed Slewfoot
I am skeptical of both Christianity and the occult, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a book about both. Abanes discusses matters which are important to both believers and non-believers, such as the importance of respecting fat people, skinny people, and Moaning Myrtles.
As for whether or not occult powers really exist, Abanes presents a case of a person undergoing eerie visions and sensations while becoming entrapped in Satanism. I wonder, however, if those visions and sensations resulted from the drugs and alcohol which the person was consuming at the time.
I was surprised that Abanes cited evidence that astrology is ineffective. This indicated to me that astrology comes from neither God nor Satan.
Yes, Abanes argues very convincingly that the occult is at odds with Christianity. He does not prove to my satisfaction that the occult is evil and that Christianity is good, but I didn't expect him to.

Quotes to Consider
By A Customer
"If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love."
-- Albus Dumbledore
"It is our choices, Harry, that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities."
-- Albus Dumbledore
"There is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!"
"You are quite wrong...indeed, your failure to realize that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness --"
-- Conversation between Voldemort (bad) and Dumbledore (good)
"It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more."
-- Albus Dumbledore
"You are protected, in short, by your ability to love!"
-- Albus Dumbledore
"You fail to realize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!"
-- Albus Dumbledore
"If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals."
-- Sirius Black
"What was there to be gained by fighting the most evil wizard who has ever existed? Only innocent lives, Peter!"
-- Sirius Black
"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED! DIED RATHER THAN BETRAYED YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!"
-- Sirius Black
"There is a room in the Department of Mysteries that is kept locked at all times. It contains a force that is at once more powerful and terrible than life, than human intelligence, than forces of nature. It is this power [shown in book 6 to be love] that you possess in such quantities and which Voldemort has none at all. That power took you to save Sirius tonight. That power also saved you from possession by Voldemort, because he could not bear to reside in a body so full of the force he detests. In the end, it mattered not that you could not close your mind. It was your heart that saved you."
-- Albus Dumbledore
Please, Abanes, do spare me from such satanism.

Are People Really This Stupid?
By Sarah
After reading through the first couple chapters, it was clear that this book was going nowhere fast. Those who are posting 5 star reviews are only arguing that Harry Potter does not reinforce society with Christian values the way that Narnia and other "proclaimed" Christian-inspired series do. First and foremost, Harry Potter NEVER claimed to represent the Gospel, EVER. Let's hear that loud and clear. Second, I think we can all think of a whole slew of movies/literature/songs etc. which also DO NOT represent the Gospel, and DO NOT claim to represent the Gospel. Plain and simple, nobody attacked Aladdin when Disney decided to use the mythical Genie as a main character. "Boo Boo SHAME ON YOU!" Why don't we all go around ranting and raving like lunatics on every piece of entertainment that doesn't get our Veggie-Tales stamp of approval. Frankly, these attacks on Harry Potter are from complete morons and so is the dunce that wrote this completely inadequate book. While he sits around researching the history behind ancient levitation spells, I'm going to enjoy the strong-willed passionate character that Harry Potter is. And instead of freaking every body out about witchcraft (which is also present in Narnia and Lord of The Rings) why don't we point out the parts of the movie which are representative of great characteristics and "Biblical teachings" and learn lessons from the parts where behavior does not line up with our Gospel beliefs. Oh, forgive me, I forgot that your own lives DO NOT LINE UP WITH THE GOSPEL. Because we are all sinful. So maybe instead of protesting something that can be used to actually glorify God, we should be taking your children out of your own imperfect homes and put them in plastic Gospel bubbles where they never see humans who lie, cheat, steal, slander, or fight. The funny thing is, Harry actually has a genuine drive and purpose for his missions. Can we all say that for Aladdin? Before you jump on a bandwagon of knocking something because it comes in a different style, maybe you should turn around and look at what your children have been watching all this time.
Man, idiots annoy me.
