Poorly organized and edited, looseleaf
By Catherine
First off, you're better off buying one from someone who has already taken the class, because at least then the book will be in a binder. The book comes looseleaf and is a pain to manage when pages rip out.

The book itself is very disorganized. It repeats sentences word for word two paragraphs later, almost as if the author just copy/pasted everything to add more length. It's very hard to stay focused when you're experiencing dj vu every two paragraphs. I ended up doing my own research on most of the topics covered in the book simply because I just couldn't follow what the author was trying to say. The editor must have forgotten to drink his coffee if she actually went through this book.

Not using as text for my Intro Archaeology classes again....
By The Archaeologist's Guide to the Galaxy
This text is comprehensive, but extremely densely written, so much so that many of my students have a very hard time reading it. Even I found my mind wandering more often than I would have expected. Added to this, there is a heavy emphasis on concepts of subsistence and more economic approaches to archaeology, and almost nothing on the more theoretical approaches. While I would hardly want it to discuss post-structuralism or the like in heavy depth, some discussion of forms of social reproduction beyond the economic would have been welcome.

Additionally, I will note that the ebook version of the text is appallingly presented. Instead of linking images individually, they simply batch processed the entire book, meaning that if you are reading it on an e-reader (like say, a kindle or even a tablet device the size of a iPad mini or Samsung Tablet), you cannot adjust the text size or margins. What is more, the margins are huge, so effectively, you have to t zoom in to read the text every time you turn a page. Additionally, you cannot read it in Portrait, you have to turn it to Landscape.

I should note, however that Pearson (the publisher) was very good at creating a customized printed text that was built to my design to match the needs of the the Intro Archaeology class I was teaching. Even so, I would be very surprised if I use this text again.
