About the Author
Rev. Rob Fuquay is senior pastor at St. Luke s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, IN. As a pastor to one of the largest churches in the denomination, Rob says as he studies Jesus, he sees someone who shows grace to all people, and he wants to be a part of a church that models that understanding. Fuquay has degrees from Pfeiffer University and Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He and his wife, Susan, have three daughters - Julie, Sarah, and Anna.

Way short of possibilities

I believe that the book addresses a very important and needed connection and how God and Jesus seek to be involved in our life. However, I felt that there is very little information to work with in this material. The first session is incredibly shy of conversation ideas and there is a great amount of information and depth to be explored in addressing the importance of the name "I Am" and I spent hours researching more material. We as Westerners are presented with translations that fit our vernacular, and that is understandable. However, the true Hebrew translation of Exodus reads differently and adds a wealth of discussion material. Also, there is no mention of the Targums and how they translate this. Additionally, the DVD is woefully lacking and minutes are added to the DVD just in pictures with no significant substance or description of what we are being shown. I actually found myself purchasing additional resources to help add depth to the Bible study. The thought of using the I Am's is great, but it needs to be expanded and taken to a deeper level.

The God We know, Exploring the "I Am" Sayings of Jesus

This a most interesting book and the author uses such modern-day examples to get the points across as well as using verses from the books of the Bible. I read each chapter and then go back and review it. It is very useful and informative book for any season, not only Lent. The author seems to have a wealth of knowledge before him as he was writing this book, and he expresses it so vividly in the text.

A teaching for the flesh, for the self-centered generation

This is a fleshly teaching, with the primary focus on the self. It diminishes God, diminishes Christ, and elevates mankind. It is a "study" of the "I Am" sayings of Jesus that completely and purposely strips them of Jesus' claims of divinity. The author's premise is that Jesus' "I Am" sayings are actually supposed to be understood in light of what they say about us, and what they say about how Jesus fills our needs. The entire book is an attempt to re-interpret Jesus as a good teacher who did not claim to be God (John 10:33), all the while tickling the reader's ears with appeals to the emotions and feeding the reader's pride and self-centeredness. Chapter 6 is a brazen attack on Jesus' claim, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Here the author attempts to re-interpret Jesus' statement using ridiculous logic, reducing it down to a statement that he is just demonstrating "a way of life" that we should pattern ourselves after. The author therefore strongly implies that Jesus is not the only way to salvation. Do not allow this false teaching into your church: it is laced with the spirit of antichrist.

The Definitive History

"Conquest of the Incas" is almost unquestionably the best book ever written about the 16th century Spanish conquest of the Inca empire in Peru and neighboring countries. It replaces Prescott's famous "Conquest of Peru," a brilliant piece of research and writing but one compiled at a Boston desk from archival materials. Hemming has much more personal familiarity with the subject and a much greater range of sources to draw on.

How it was that conquistador Francisco Pizarro and less than 200 men were able to overthrow the Inca empire of 15 million subjects is one of the great tales of history. "Conquest" details that struggle for power in convincing and fascinating detail, focusing on Pizarro and his brothers who were all brutal, deceitful, and courageous. Hemming gives almost equal time to the Incas and their leaders as they struggle against or accommodate themselves to Spanish rule. (As will be evident to contemporary visitors to Cuzco and Andean Peru, the Spanish conquest never penetrated very deeply. The Inca culture and language still live; Pizarro is despised by most Peruvians and the last Inca, Tupac Amaru, is a national hero.)

The story of the conquest has been romanticized in the classic play "Royal Hunt of the Sun" which is well worth seeing for its portraits of Pizarro and the Inca emperor Atahualpa. But the capture and murder of Atahualpa is only the beginning of the story. What followed was a 40 year struggle between Inca and Spaniard (and among Spaniards) for control of Peru that ended with the beheading of Tupac Amaru. The last chapter of the book moves into modern times as it describes the search for the lost Inca province of Vilcabamba and the discovery of Machu Pichu in the early 20th century. The mystery of the last Incas and their jungle retreats has fascinated writers and achaelogists until the present day -- as has the Inca empire, perhaps the most enigmatic of history.

"Conquest of the Incas" was published in 1970. Were it to be revised today more emphasis would probably be placed on the role of smallpox epidemics that disrupted the Inca empire and made it ripe for conquest. But that's about the only deficiency I find in the book. It's one of the best histories ever written -- so good that it has found few imitators.

Good Read

I began this book just before my visit to Peru and read it along the way - a great way to prepare for the trip and to absorb more during an incredibly educational experience. It really was a key part of my enjoyment of the trip, because I was able to glean more from our various guides and better appreciate the ruins and spanish buildings, particularly in and around Cuzco. The book is an interesting read, but note that the fall of the Incas is essentially completed during the first 100 pages - a good thing if you want a thorough understanding of the history in a very brief time, a bad thing if you were looking for more detail. (I actually liked this aspect of the book.) Another key to this book's success is Hemming's ability to convey who was actually writing the history since of course the goings on would be viewed and recorded differently by spanish conquistadors vs. religious types, to say nothing of the difference of opinion about what happened between the Spanish and the native quechuas. He does a good job of illustrating the different views and allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions about what may have actually happened. I found out about this book from Lonely Planet-the key travel book for the area-and I agree with them and thoroughly recommend it. No trip to Peru should be taken without it!

Gripping account of an unequal struggle between peoples

This is a readable and authoritative account of Pizarro's conquest of Peru and search for El Dorado in the 1530's: a must-read backgrounder for those who plan a trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu and an astounding account of war strategies and incredible upsets in a hostile mountain terrain between unequal forces with vastly different technologies. It gives real understanding into present-day relationships between the Spanish and native peoples in South America. I couldn't put it down.

"Tropical Medicine Lecture Notes" provides a comprehensive overview of tropical medicine for the student or practitioner, including diagnostic approach to symptoms, infections, and other diseases, plus a brief final chapter on the consequences of the designated neglected tropical diseases. Prevention and management from a public health viewpoint are discussed, as well as the expected information on diagnosis and treatment of individuals.

The book is well-organized and relatively consistent in quality of content despite the many different contributors. Color and illustrations such as photographs, charts, and algorithms are employed well and necessary additional resources for in-depth study are incorporated by chapter. A simple table of contents and a serviceable index aid in navigation. Online resources include multiple choice questions.

The contributors are predominantly from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with significant contributions from other UK clinicians and experts. Contributing authors and editors forgo payment and the royalties fund medical students doing clinical electives in tropical countries.

Lots of knowledge

I'm not in the field of medicine, but it is extremely fascinating to me. Subsequently I picked this book up in order to perhaps learn a few things in case of a disaster where medical help may not be available.

First off I learned a lot of useful things about different infections and the like as well as how to identify them. There are also treatments that are discussed and for the common person those may be harder to execute.

It seems like some things are covered more in depth than others. However since this is suppose to be lecture notes I'm sure there are other readings that would pair well with this. It also looks like there is an interactive online option however it requires a code that I was not provided with this "advance copy". I also would have preferred more pictures of the said ailments but there are other books for that I'm sure.

There's a lot of information to obtain from this book whether your a would be health professional or a regular civilian who believes in being prepared for the worst. Keep in mind this is not light reading in any way but as far as i'm concerned its worth having.

Useful if you are traveling in the remote countrysides of SE Asia

The text itself is readable to most people, which is great. There is some medical jargon as expected, but nothing that some light googling couldn't make clear. In general the text covers symptoms, the cause, a short summary of how the disease progresses, and hopefully, as it does in most cases, it discusses a treatment.

The quality of the paper is great. It's smooth; text is clear and so are the color pictures.

Pictures of symptoms are in color.

The book is a good size. The pictures make it look huge, but in reality its dimensions are smaller than most high school notebooks.

Price: It is a textbook, so it will command textbook prices. It's actually pretty reasonable for a textbook in terms of price.

[Verdict]

Highly recommended if you plan on going anywhere remote in tropical areas.

This work traces the development of the staff of the AEF and describes how Pershing found the generals to command those divisions that fought on the Western Front in World War I. Many of Pershing's generals had been colonels only a few months prior to assuming command of divisions. John J. Pershing's task was to mold a diverse group of men into effective staff officers and into general officers to face the rigors of modern combat. How he accomplished this task, and how well the AEF did, is the focus of this work on the AEF's command and staff structure.

Important study of the AEF.

The Great War found the United States unprepared, as is our custom. Excluding the Spanish American War debacle, we had never really fought overseas, and there was no one in the American military in 1917with any experience in the command or management of large formations. Fortunately there was John J. Pershing, who not only had the organizational skills but the political strength to build and hold together the new armies. Pershing's Herculean tasks of finding new leadership and eliminating deadwood, training the troops (and their leaders!), tapping civilian talent for special skills, organizing new staff functions and assimilating new technologies, so reminiscent of World War II, are well described here in Cooke's usual clear and workmanlike narrative; in a work essential for the World War I bookshelf and of interest to the general reader as well.
