Ugh.
By A Customer
They tell me that Sarah Kane made quite a stir in British theatre before her untimely suicide in 1999. Given the undeniable intensity of "Blasted," not to mention the in-your-face subject matter, it's not difficult to see why. I think Kane had at least some talent, but the modest technical skill she brings to this play is definitely overwhelmed by the unpleasantness of the material. Really, "Blasted" is just that old Theatre of the Absurd shtick--you know: "The world is a crazy, horrible place but it's all we have"--updated for somewhat more permissive 1990's audiences; no one familiar with the best plays of Beckett, Pinter, or Stoppard should be terribly impressed by it. The companion piece, "Phaedra's Love," is more of the same, only lacking the questionable merits of the first play. In fact, "Phaedra's Love" is flat-out awful, strongly suggesting that Kane had really very little to say. But that's often how it goes with would-be rebels in the arts.

Rebuttal
By A Customer
Kane's work is self-indulgent pap, and the fact that anyone is compelled to perform such dross, much less attend a performance thereof, is as worthy of ridicule as any clown or village idiot. The supposed shock value such pornography displays is imaginary in the minds of those who pathetically but desperately seek attention through such antics as a child screaming at the top of his lungs to be heard by an unattentive mother. To the rest of the world it may disgust us, but it fails to shock us only precisely because that is what it is so desperately trying to do. The cry for attention becomes sad, pathetic and, eventually, compells us to disregard it as the most microscopic, unimportant and, thus, most easily disregarded distraction in a world otherwise filled with beauty, challenge and potential.
Canada reveals his/her shallow obsession, by the religious overtones to his/her review. The myth of religion, any religion, my friend, is as constricting to your intellect (what little of it there is) as is the works of Kane and others like her. How much more peace and love can the world stand? It's cup is nearly empty as it is, so I would say a nearly infinite amount. As to Kane and others like her, the eradication of their work through death is the only value their life will ever bring to anyone. How ironic that the only gift they bring to us is their own death, when the we all would have been better off had they never existed in the first place. Kane and artists like her are among the most compelling arguments in favor of abortion.

Her voice will go on
By J D Cully
These, the first two plays by Sarah Kane, the most brilliantly original voice of 1990s theatre, are essential. Blasted captures the full horror of contemporary war and socks home scalpel-sharp observations about life, abuse of all kinds and extreme despair, yet finds some compassion amid it all. Phaedra's Love is a majestic macabre comedy, a re-working of the Greek tragedy of Phaedra, yet again with serious points to make about obsessive love, extreme boredom and hypocrisy.
Sarah's work will live on for centuries, both through performances of her own plays and through the new writers influenced by her who are already emerging.
I met Sarah twice, and she was a very lovely lady, so may you die horribly, Colorado, you scum.

Helpful but rather dry and at least one serious error
By pond-jumper
This little gem is packed with all sorts of tricks to make short-term memory a snap. And let's face it, short-term is mostly what we use. After we've bought the groceries, how much longer do we need to remember that shopping list? This is not to say you can't stretch some memorized facts to a much longer term, like to the end of the school year for that final exam, or retaining seldom-seen people's names for as long as you work for that big company.

The book is a fresh take, with new ideas, on the older memory books sold by Harry Lorayne (who built upon a history of two thousand years of memory techniques). At the heart of it, though, you're still using your imagination and wild, absurd, comical images to relate a fact you need to memorize to a place, an event, a number, or something called "memory of loci" (such as rooms in your house, etc.). Kudos to Dominic for bringing the latter back after the Middle Ages suppressed it.

Dominic adds some fresh ideas to the established ways, or reintroduces methods that Harry and those before him didn't mention. An example of the former: How I Wish I Could Enumerate Pi Easily (3.1415926, the number of letters in each word). Or the latter, as an extended acronym: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain (ROYGBIV, colors in the rainbow). For the music majors among us, Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle (learn some music theory if you don't understand that).

One place where the book is seriously in error is section 44, Binary Numbers. Dominic does the obvious, turning triplets into base 10 numbers. Unfortunately, he apparently has never written a computer program, nor even just a small script. His numbers are SERIOUSLY WRONG. If you don't know binary, don't worry. For the rest of us, encountering this section is like driving down the highway at high speed then suddenly throwing the tranny into Park. Something akin to a controlled crash, and it is seriously distracting. Dominic writes: 000=0 001=1 011=2 111=3 110=4 100=5 010=6 101=7. I think most of us will recognize that 0 and 1 are correct, but 2 through 7 are something from Behind the Looking Glass that Alice must have lent to Dominic. I used a lot of white-out on these pages and elsewhere that reference them.

Though not "wrong," Dominic flies in the face of centuries, sometimes millenia, in other sections. For days of the week, he uses Sun-Sat values of 1,2,3,4,5,6,0. Mathematicians have for centuries used 0,1,2,3,4,5,6. Dominic's premise remains intact, but his make-your-own-road reinvention requires us to forget what we've learned since childhood, ignore what the world has used for hundreds of years, and learn a new ordinal system for days of the week. Yes, I did some serious editing of this section to bring his written work and ideas inline with the customary ordinal system.

The same can be said for his numeral mnemonics. He has his own phonetic choice, the Dominic System, where 0=O 1=A 2=B 3=C 4=D 5=E 6=S 7=G 8=H 9=N. I have to take serious exception to his choices, not because he's thrown away the centuries-old Mnemonic Major System, but because his system does not permit the full phonetic sounds of the Engish language to be used. Where is L and F/V, for example? We can't contrive the words LoVe, ViaL (PHiaL), ViLe, eViL or LoVeLy using his choice of phonetics. There's no M, N or R. Also we have 3=C and 6=S, so either we have an ambiguous choice for S/Z sounds, or the 3=C should actually be 3=K (K, CH and hard C as in cookie). True, I would have to unlearn what I already know, what millions of people know, and drop the Major System to adopt Dominic's, but with such weakness apparent in his choices, why would I? It was too much effort to edit his text in these chapters, so I just took the high points (which are very good, by the way), and applied them to the the de facto standard used for centuries.

Would I recommend the book? If you haven't been taught any memory techniques or ordinal sets, or studied these on your own, then yes! Certainly! The books is fresh and modern and has great ideas for tricks you can use (assuming you're willing to go at this as a paid-for course and set aside time each week to concentrate on it).

If you now other de facto standards, examples of which I've given above, then my recommendation is "maybe." I enjoyed it and learned a good number of tricks. But I stumbled a great deal in many sections, so much so that I found myself arguing with Dominic in my mind rather than concentrating on what I was reading. It took a great deal of effort to get to the end. Worth my time, but maddening all the same.

A Pretty Good Book on Mnemonics Especially for Beginners!
By Nick B.
A mnemonics book by a world memory champion Dominic O' Brien. He explains his specific techniques for a variety of subjects.

What I like most about his book is he breaks it in related sections based on the skill set of the individual reading. Someone who has no experience can begin learning the basics and continue through to cover much more advanced techniques in later sections.

I would recommend this book to anyone with slight to a serious interest in mnemonics.

Too much too fast
By Radek
I am an avid reader and I'm constantly looking for ways to improve my retention of what I have read. I have no doubt that Mr. O'Brien is a master of what he does. However, it doesn't translate well into the written word.

As of this writing, I have covered about half of this book. There are numerous exercises to "prove" to you that the technique works, but after doing one set and going on to the next, it is easy to forget the first.

Mr. O'Brien uses several different techniques to train/improve the memory. Most of them are all classics that can be found in several other sources.

There is no real consistency throughout the book. Different situations require that the reader use a different techique. Since no one works in all situations, you have to master all of them. This takes up a lot of time.

One saving grace is that by using these techniques, the reader has to really concentrate on what is being read. Just by increasing one's awareness and focus while reading, will increase retention.

It is a good read. Hardly practical or efficient.

I would like to find some technique that can be applied to a wider variety of situations. This way, there would be less to remember initially, less time invested, and greater comprehension. Maybe I'm looking for too much.

What a Treat! Hard to put it down.
By BukLover
Johnston McCulley is a hard act to follow. As the Creator of El Zorro, he's the champ, the master. However, these authors of Tales of Zorro do a commendable job as keepers of the flame. This book is a real treat for any Zorro fan, whether you love Guy Williams, Duncan Regehr, or Antonio Banderas, among others, in the role.
Seventeen all new stories about the adventures of Zorro are a mix of many versions from McCulley's written word to movies to Television, some written in such a graphic way you can easily imagine them as half hour TV shows much like Disney's Zorro. Some are more inventive than others, some with a unique point of view. While several are stand outs two in particular are exceptional: "Winds of Change" by Richard Dean Starr for suspense, creativity, understanding of the character, and the vernacular of McCulley, and "Colors Seen By Candlelight" by Peter David for imagination, action, romance, and a clever twist. The bold illustrations by the internationally renown Rubn Procopio are a wonderful added bonus.
There is something here for every Zorro fan. If you love the character you will love Tales of Zorro.

needs proofing--full of typos and grammatical errors
By Linda
I am a huge Zorro fan, but when I pay full price for a new book, I expect it to be proofed before it is printed. I can read fanfiction online for free if I don't mind overlooking grammatical errors and typos. This book is full of typos and it is so disturbing that I haven't finished reading all the stories. I have most of the stories read but there are a few yet I haven't read. Out of the stories I have read, there are a few pretty good ones and some that are pretty mediocre and at least one I thought was terrible.

Don't believe for a minute that Isabelle Allende contributed any stories to this book. She wrote an "Afterword" for this book which is about why she wrote her book, "Zorro." One story, "The Weeping Woman" by Greg Cox is worthwhile.

I prefer Johnston McCulley's Zorro (since he created Zorro) and the Disney Zorro was based on those stories. These stories are mostly based on other Zorro creations--like Allende's and New World Zorro.

There are a lot of people who collect all kinds of Zorro memorabilia and will have to have this book just to add to their collection.

Tales of Zorro...Great
By Tim Lasiuta
"The Fox" has been around a lonnng time. The "Curse of Capistrano" introduced the world to Zorro. Johnston McCulley penned the legendary tale in 1918, and it took little time for Hollywood (Douglass Fairbanks) to bring him to the silent screen as the 2nd `hero' taken from popular media. (Tarzan was the first in 1918).

From that time forward, Zorro has always been in the public eye. Don Diego de La Vega has appeared in pulp magazines (McCulley), comic books (Disney, Dell, Dynamite, Gold Key, Marvel), paperbacks and hardcovers, TV (Disney, New World, new series, Filmation), and the BIG screen. Costumes, statues, and hundred s of licensed goods have borne the Zorro name. When once McCulley owned the character, Disney, then now Zorro Productions under the watchful eye of Sandra Curtis and John Gertz have been faithful guardians.

Today, Moonstone Books is the proud publisher of Zorro fiction while Dynamite publishes the Wagner/Francovilla comic book. Tales was a labor of love, and the results speak for themselves.

Sculptor Ruben Procopio supplied inspired artwork for the interior of the book while Doug Klauba and Martinez supplied excellent covers. The book includes 17 NEW pieces of fiction by writers such as Peter David, Jeff Marriotte, Robin Wayne Bailey, Greg Cox, Nancy Holdner, Elizabeth Massie, Jan Adkins, Loren Estelman, Ed Gorman, and Max Allan Collins.
The book is fantastic. Each author interprets Zorro a slightly different way, yet each story could be a TV episode unto itself.

Fans of heroic fiction will love this book. All ages will appreciate the talent and obvious love for the character. Moonstone Books is to be congratulated on this historical volume!

NOW A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor, featuring stunning artwork by Jim Kay. At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting-- he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd-- whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself-- Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

Review
There's no denying it: this is one profoundly sad story. But it's also wise, darkly funny and brave, told in spare sentences, punctuated with fantastic images and stirring silences. Past his sorrow, fright and rage, Conor ultimately lands in a place - an imperfect one, of course - where healing can begin. A MONSTER CALLS is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.
—The New York Times

A nuanced tale that draws on elements of classic horror stories to delve into the terrifying terrain of loss. . . . Ness brilliantly captures Conor's horrifying emotional ride as his mother's inevitable death approaches. In an ideal pairing of text and illustration, the novel is liberally laced with Kay's evocatively textured pen-and-ink artwork, which surrounds the text, softly caressing it in quiet moments and in others rushing toward the viewer with a nightmarish intensity.A poignant tribute to the life and talent of Siobhan Dowd and an astonishing exploration of fear.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Profoundly moving, expertly crafted tale... a singular masterpiece, exceptionally well-served by Kay's atmospheric and ominous illustrations... tackles the toughest of subjects by refusing to flinch, meeting the ugly truth about life head-on with compassion, bravery, and insight.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A brilliantly executed, powerful tale.
—School Library Journal (starred review)

Ness twists out a resolution that is revelatory in its obviousness, beautiful in its execution, and fearless in its honesty. Kays artwork keeps the pace, gnawing at the edges of the pages with thundercloud shadows and keeping the monster just barely, terribly seeable.
—Booklist (starred review)

A masterpiece about life and loss that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.
—Library Media Connection (starred review)

and I thought this might be a book they would enjoy, because of the illustrations
By The Pages In-Between- Tracy Thomas
I have been reading aloud to my twins every night, and I thought this might be a book they would enjoy, because of the illustrations. I ended up finishing it with them within 24 hours.

You know how you come across a book, and after reading it, you feel like EVERYONE needs to read it as well? That is how I felt with this book. As a mother, this book ripped my heart to shreds, and put me in an emotional state as I was reading it to my sons. But it was worth every tear I shed. Guys, if you haven't read this book, Do it! The story, the writing, the illustrations, this book was pure perfection and a total 5 out of 5 stars for me.

If you have read this, what were your thoughts?

Chilling, raw, and phenomenal!
By Laura
One thing that is irrevocably human, regardless of age, is how we face the truth. A lot of times it's not as pretty as we like to think because the truth often equates to reality. Connor's nights are plagued by nightmares. His mind is clawing at his reality to tell him something. Something important. At a critical time in his life, as his mother suffers her ongoing illness, his nightmares come to life as the Monster. Or are they really nightmares? Is the Monster really their embodiment? The Monster is old magic of the earth. Older than any religion or belief. Connor's pain and rage has unwittingly called to him in his time of crisis, but is he here to help Connor, or destroy him?

This is one of those books that hits you inside. The story is about a young boy facing a reality he's afraid of. He represents everything it means to be a kid facing this situation and human in general. This is highly relateable story of inner demons and the contradiction of humanity. Patrick Ness has written a very true representation of the darkness in humans when faced with an unwilling truth. With fear. This is classified a teen and/or middle grade book, but it reads much deeper than that. As childlike as some aspects are, this story transcends age to reach the core of human emotions and relationships.

I had to binge read this. I started it and could not put it down. It is crafted brutally, beautifully, and as raw as any book can get. I cannot recommend this enough to everyone. It has quickly become a favorite of mine and one I plan to read more than once.

A great book!
By Ashley Tomlinson
So this book was not at all what I expected it to be but it was still so good. The ending is a tear-jerker, for sure. By that I mean I sat there heartbroken hugging my fluffy puppy trying to make the sad thoughts go away. There are stories out there that teach you a lesson but this book goes above and beyond that. It teaches a few lessons and in a way that younger audiences will be able to understand it.

There are awesome pictures in this book which is probably the main reason I got it. Who can turn down a picture book? The illustrations are well done and really helped the story come to life. I got this book because it was on several must-read lists so I felt like I had to get it. Then once I got it I had to immediately read it which normally never happens to me. I get a book and it rots on my shelf for months before I finally pick it up to read, sometimes years.

Conor was a great character, he was just a thirteen-year-old boy trying to come to terms with what was happening to his mom. It's a sad, hard thing to deal with and he felt so alone. I wanted to wrap him up in a hug and protect him from all the bad things that were happening to him. The monster, helped him find the truth that was hidden beneath himself. I ended up looking forward to the scenes with the monster and I looked forward to his stories. Even though Conor didn't quite get what the monster was trying to tell him most of the time.

I see that this is going to be a movie and I refuse to see it in theaters. No way am I crying surrounded by a bunch of people that I don't know. I can see why it was on so many must-read lists, though, it's definitely worth a read.
