The Wolf Wilder, by Katherine Rundell

A girl and the wolves who love her embark on a rescue mission through Russian wilderness in this lyrical tale from the author of the acclaimed Rooftoppers and Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms.

Feo’s life is extraordinary. Her mother trains domesticated wolves to be able to fend for themselves in the snowy wilderness of Russia, and Feo is following in her footsteps to become a wolf wilder. She loves taking care of the wolves, especially the three who stay at the house because they refuse to leave Feo, even though they’ve already been wilded. But not everyone is enamored with the wolves, or with the fact that Feo and her mother are turning them wild. And when her mother is taken captive, Feo must travel through the cold, harsh woods to save her—and learn from her wolves how to survive.

From the author of Rooftoppers, which Booklist called “a glorious adventure,” and Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms, which VOYA called “a treasure of a book,” comes an enchanting novel about love and resilience.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Feodora "Feo" Petrovich is a "dark and stormy girl" who lives deep in the snow-covered Russian forest with her mother circa 1917. They are wolf wilders, brave souls who help reintroduce wolves into the wild, once the animals have outlived their usefulness as pets and entertainment for the aristocracy. When the deplorably evil General Rakov threatens their livelihood, burns down their home, and arrests Feo's mother, the plucky young girl sets off into the woods with her three lupine companions and a newborn wolf pup. She's soon joined by a runaway soldier from the tsar's Imperial Army who's not much older than Feo herself. Together, the ragtag band of humans and wolves must outrun Rakov and his men, survive brutal winter conditions, and figure out a way to liberate Feo's imprisoned mother. As in her previous two novels, Rooftoppers (2013) and Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms (2014, both S. & S.), Rundell gives readers a fierce young heroine whose strength and independence are as appealing and authentic as her painstakingly concealed vulnerabilities. Though appearing only briefly in an handful of scenes, Feo's mother is a well-drawn, larger-than-life presence in the girl's life; readers will believe that Feo will risk anything to save her. The pacing slows in the middle, as the characters visit a struggling village and recruit other kids to their cause. The ending, though satisfying, comes quickly and stretches credulity just a bit. Rundell's strength is in the beauty of her writing—lyrical sentences that evoke the drama and simplicity of fairy tales and folklore, combined with descriptions of a setting that will have readers shivering along with the frozen characters as they trudge across the unforgiving terrain. VERDICT A solid addition to middle grade collections; hand this novel to kids who appreciate strong characters and harrowing survival stories—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Review
“A triumph! Exciting, moving, highly original, fierce, completely convincing. The world had better watch out. I don’t really know what a cocked hat is, but you’ll be knocking all the rest of us into one soon. I loved the characters, the speed, the force of it all.” (Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass)

“The hero of Katherine Rundell’s new book may be young and small, but Feo has a spirit as wild and dauntless as that of the wolves she cares for. I don’t know whether this irresistible force of nature and the colorful gang of waifs drawn to her had an actual hand in starting the Russian Revolution, but Rundell convinced me that they did. The Wolf Wilder is chilling (quite literally!) and thrilling from start to finish.” (Tor Seidler, author of National Book Award finalist Mean Margaret and Firstborn)

"[A] future classic...Enchanting, unique and outstanding: don't miss it." (The Bookseller)

"Rugged cross-country adventure with a diverse cast of two- and four-legged fellow travelers and a sturdy main character who is more than a little "wilded" herself." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Rundell gives readers a fierce young heroine whose strength and independence are as appealing and authentic as her painstakingly concealed vulnerabilities...Rundell’s strength is in the beauty of her writing—lyrical sentences that evoke the drama and simplicity of fairy- and folklore, combined with descriptions of a setting that will have readers shivering along with the frozen characters as they trudge across the unforgiving terrain." (School Library Journal)

*"Fairy tale and history merge seamlessly; in a land where terror reigns and adults grow numb with fear, a "little wolf girl" outmaneuvers a sadistic general, awes a village, and inspires an army of children to march on St. Petersburg with dreams of justice. Breathtaking." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

*"Rundell never fails to work magic with language and deft storytelling. Feo’s world of wolves and snow, danger and triumphant bravery, rings with the classic allure of folktales. Her spirited, half-wild nature shines brightly on the page, even as her vulnerabilities endear her to readers’ hearts." (Booklist, starred review)

*"Will have readers cheering--or perhaps howling--their approval." (BCCB, starred review)

She grew up in Zimbabwe, Brussels, and London, and is currently a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. Melding fast-paced action with stunning literary description, the prose grabs you by the scruff of the neck and never lets go.
By KidsReads
“Once upon a time, a hundred years ago, there was a dark and stormy girl.” With these words, a twist on clich story openers, Katherine Rundell invites us along on her latest middle-grade adventure. Just as Feo Petrovna is no conventional heroine, the villain of THE WOLF WILDER is no Big Bad Wolf, but a despotic Russian general set on destroying everything the 12-year-old girl holds dear. Feo lives with her mother in the remote and wintry Russian wilderness, where they train domesticated wolves to survive in that same landscape. Through the process known as wolf wilding, they take society’s unwanted pets and transform them back into creatures fit for the woods. Feo and her mother bear the tell-tale scars of their profession, and to General Rakov, they pose a dangerous threat that must be tamed.

When Rakov and his men accuse the Petrovna’s wolves of attacking army supplies, Feo’s idyllic (if unusual) life is put in jeopardy. And when the family continues to defy his orders, the general places Feo’s mother under arrest for treason, carting her off to prison in St. Petersburg. Feo embarks on a perilous trek to rescue her mother and defend the wolves. Along the way, Feo’s circle of companions expands beyond her three most beloved wolves to include a conflicted young soldier named Ilya, a teenage revolutionary and his neighbors. Feo lets her new comrades into the pack, without sacrificing a scrap of her independence.

While the adults of a nearby village are busy debating how to resist General Rakov’s oppression, the kids devise a plan of attack. The scene in which the children prepare for battle is pure comedy. Having more in common with wolves than buttoned-up soldiers, these kids are not afraid to spit, bite and kick their enemies in the shins --- and more delicate areas. They gather an impressive arsenal of homemade weapons, including snowballs packed with shards of broken glass. The children’s attack is as elegantly choreographed as the Russian ballet Ilya adores. Feo’s mother turns out to be absolutely correct: “Children are the toughest creatures on the planet. They endure.”

Fans of historical fiction and adventure will wolf down Feo’s story in no time. THE WOLF WILDER embraces many of the themes explored in Rundell’s ROOFTOPPERS --- unbreakable mother-daughter bonds, resilient kids, belief in the impossible --- yet the writing is far from predictable. Melding fast-paced action with stunning literary description, the prose grabs you by the scruff of the neck and never lets go. Readers can look forward to a happily-ever-after befitting the unconventional tale of a “dark and stormy” girl and her steadfast friends --- both lupine and human.

Beautifully Written Middle Grade Set in Romanov Russia
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
I’d noted The Wolf Wilder for its beautiful covers. Both the UK and US covers are simply gorgeous. Despite my love of wolves and of beautiful covers, I hadn’t really marked the book down to actually read. As anyone who reads my blog regularly knows, I’m super picky about middle grade, so I’m rather hesitant to add them to my to-read list. When a copy of The Wolf Wilder showed up on my doorstep unsolicited, there was no doubt I would be giving this gorgeous book a try. And, you know, turns out The Wolf Wilder is beautiful both inside and out. I read it in one night because I couldn’t put it down.

As a title, The Wolf Wilder intrigued me. I wasn’t quite sure what it meant, and I hadn’t bothered to read the blurb, which is also my style. Wolf wilding was apparently a real thing in Russia. Turns out nobles would have wolves trained up as pets/toys/status symbols. However, when the wolf got too fat or injured someone, they would get rid of them. Luckily for the wolves, killing a wolf was considered bad luck, so they were sent to wolf wilders, who would teach them how to fend for themselves in the wild.

Feodora (though she’ll ignore you if you call her that—she only answers to Feo) and her mother are wolf wilders. Feo’s done all of her growing up with wolves as best friends. The rumors about them are that Feo’s half wild herself. Though that’s going a bit far, Feo does have a lot that’s wolfish in her way of thinking, which means that she’s fiercely loyal to her pack but very dangerous to those who mess with her pack.

Enter General Rakov, there to mess with her pack. The Tsar and/or Rakov are sick of the wolves in the area killing the Tsar’s animals. Rakov shows up one night threatening all sorts of terrible stuff if he catches Feo and her mom with another wolf; all wolves must be killed. Obviously, since Feo and her mom aren’t psychopaths, they don’t kill the next wolf to arrive, a sweet girl Feo dubs Tenderfoot. You can probably tell where this is heading.

The story alone is beautiful, but what brings it to the next level for me is the history. Learning about wolf wilding is awesome and man was that a profession in need of a novel if there ever was one. Even more, The Wolf Wilder is set in the waning period of Tsar Nicolas II’s reign. Without feeling remotely textbooky or infodumpy, there’s a lot of history laid out really subtly in The Wolf Wilder.

In Rakov, it’s clear that the Romanovs weren’t doing a good job running the country. Corruption was everywhere, and the common folk were suffering. In Alexei, the hope of the revolution is visible. It’s no wonder Lenin seemed like a hero when he spoke of something different for Russia. It’s really well done. I’d also not read much set in this era that wasn’t about the Romanovs themselves or high society, so The Wolf Wilder really does some wonderful and original stuff.

Obviously, I love the wolves a lot. Warning: some terrible stuff will happen to the wolves and they’re not all going to survive the book. It does hurt a lot. I think I’d be more mad about that if not for Feo’s relationship with them; they truly are her family and she views them as equals. I’m a big sucker for the love and trust between humans and other animals, so this really got me in my black heart.

The ending is a bit outlandish, but it’s done in such a way that I really want to believe in it. Certainly the kids are resourceful and clever. Plus, there’s a lot of incompetence in the system. That aside, I could not be more in love with Ilya’s dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.

I know I would have loved The Wolf Wilder just as much (or possibly more as a kid). It’s totally a book my dad would have read to me. It’s on the darker side of middle grade for sure, but I think it’s a great choice for kids and adults alike.

Starts wonderfully, loses it somewhere in the middle
By Chancie
This book's beautiful cover caught my attention, but the actual plot description in it feels a bit misleading. It felt like only the first 50 pages really focus on the wolves, but after that, they become a secondary plot point that aren't really as important anymore. Sadly, that was what I read this book for, and I expected something completely different from it.
It's does have very well done atmosphere with a few great lines and descriptive settings. Characters are fairly well done as well, but I did feel a little bored at times because they feel one dimensional.
I think my biggest issue, aside from the story derailing from what the descriptions made me expect, was that nothing felt truly earned. The triumphs felt too easy, which bored me and took me out of the story. Certain things were too predictable. I guess for a younger reader (this is a middle grade book afterall), it wouldn't be a problem. If you're older, it might fall short.
It's not a bad book, and if you're curious, it's worth grabbing. I just don't think it's particularly memorable either.

The Secret Life of Pronouns: What Our Words Say About Us, by James W. Pennebaker

In The Secret Life of Pronouns, social psychologist and language expert James W. Pennebaker uses his groundbreaking research in computational linguistics-in essence, counting the frequency of words we use-to show that our language carries secrets about our feelings, our self-concept, and our social intelligence. Our most forgettable words, such as pronouns and prepositions, can be the most revealing: their patterns are as distinctive as fingerprints.

Using innovative analytic techniques, Pennebaker X-rays everything from John McCain's tweets to the Federalist Papers. Who would have predicted that the high school student who uses too many verbs in her college admissions essay is likely to make lower grades in college? Or that a world leader's use of pronouns could reliably presage whether he will lead his country into war? You'll learn what Lady Gaga and William Butler Yeats have in common, and how Ebenezer Scrooge's syntax hints at his self-deception and repressed emotion in this sprightly, surprising tour of what our words are saying-whether we mean them to or not.

"Is it possible for a psychologist to hear just a few words from you and immediately know what makes you tick? Could this psychologist use cutting-edge science to detect your inner desires from subtle patterns in your use of language--beyond anything you were conscious of saying? It's the Little Words That Count
By John M. Ford
James Pennebaker studies words. Originally interested in the beneficial effect of writing about personal trauma, he and his students developed software to analyze this writing. Their investigation soon expanded to include spoken conversations, emails, political speeches, and other language samples. They discovered that much can be learned from the short "stealth words" that we barely notice, but that make up more than half of our speech. "Pronouns (such as I, you, we, and they), articles (a, an, the), prepositions (e.g., to, for, over), and other stealth words broadcast the kind of people we are."

Pennebaker summarizes his trauma research, noting that "people who benefit from writing express more optimism, acknowledge negative events, are constructing a meaningful story of their experience, and have the ability to change perspective as they write." Searching for reliable linguistic indicators of these processes identified writing style rather than more substantive content words. The resulting LIWC software works well regardless of a text's content.

Using both research findings and representative everyday examples, Pennebaker reviews what he has learned. Topics addressed include gender, status and social class, personality, leadership style, deception, interpersonal attraction, and group solidarity. The author not only presents conclusions from his own research, but links to supporting findings using non-linguistic methods. Specific findings include:

- LIWC correctly identifies an author's gender 72% of the time using writing style. This increases to 76% when content words are included. (Human guesses range from 55 to 65%.)

- On detecting depression: "Sadness generally causes people to focus inwardly. Pronouns tend to track people's focus of attention, and when in great emotional or physical pain, they tend to use I-words at high rates. Sadness, unlike most other emotions, is associated with looking back into the past and into the future. In other words, people tend to use past- and future-tense verbs more when they are sad or depressed compared to other strong emotions."

- "No system has ever been shown to reliably catch liars at rates higher than 65 percent. And even those with hit rates in that neighborhood (including me) have done so in highly controlled and artificial circumstances."

- "Linguistic style matching" across nine categories of function words occurs within the first 15 to 30 seconds of an attentive conversation. It is generally beyond conscious awareness. LSM profiles can predict a number of things better than chance, including whether a "speed dating" couple will pursue a further relationship after their initial four-minute discussion.

Pennebaker clearly wants to share, not just his insights, but the methods used to achieve them. Much of his research was done collaboratively, not just with students and fellow researchers, but with public figures, professionals in other fields, and anyone else with interesting documents. Readers are pointed to web sites that let them experiment with Pennebaker's techniques and a version of his LIWC software is available for more in-depth investigations. An appendix includes "A Handy Guide for Spotting and Interpreting Function Words in the Wild."

This book is an accessible summary of James Pennebaker's work with helpful citations of similar research by others. It serves as a guide to more technical discussions of text analysis through an extensive Bibliography and References section--and pointers to downloadable research reports from the author's web site. Interested readers might also enjoy Roderick Hart's Campaign Talk or one of the other related books the author mentions.

Science Writing at its Best
By Susan Woodward
Provoked by the reviews in the WSJ and NYTs, I bought this book while I was away. It was there when I got home and disrupted my readjustment to local time by keeping me up late.

The writing is clear and lively. There are appealing little eruptions of playfulness. The story is put together from lots of research findings from the author and his buddies and probably some enemies. Here's a tiny sample of riveting facts you will learn:

If you ask people to fill out a survey, they use more "I" words (I, me, mine) if you put a mirror in front of them. 2. People believe that women talk more than men. Not true, the numbers say we all talk the same amount, but women use 12% more pronouns. 3. Shakespeare's characters, including the women, all talk like men. Woody Allen's all talk like women. 4. Writing about emotional topics improves the physical and emotional health of those who do it.

Even the notes at the end are worth reading. Only here do you learn that defendants who use "I" a lot are more likely to be innocent, but "me" is used more by the truly guilty, and get suggestions for further reading like "The Psychology of Secrets" and "Strangers in a Strange Lab" (argh, but yes I will buy it).

It must be thrilling to be a Pennebaker student or colleague. He is so engaging, he loves them so much.

Information That Can't Be Used?
By Ohioan
First, I enjoyed reading much of the information in this book, particularly the parts on who uses the "I" pronoun, when and why; and who uses "we" and when and why.

Second, the information could and should have been presented in a much shorter book, whose impact would have been stronger for being more succinct. There's a lot of repetition here and a lot of padding.

Third, there's something about this book and the information in it that I find unsatisfying. That's this: the articles, prepositions, and pronouns that signify where the speaker ranks in status, that signify whether the person is telling the truth or not, that signify whether the person is up to no good or not, that signify whether the person loves the one being spoken to -- these small words, we're told over and over, go by us so quickly that we can't grasp how many times they were used. The little words just don't register in our brains. It takes a computer program, we're told, to analyze the percentage of usage of these words. So, then . . . this book merely presents information. It doesn't provide tools with which we as listeners can assess what we're hearing. I found that dissatisfying.

The author didn't promise that I would be able to use what I learned, so I can't say there was deceit involved: there wasn't. And, despite the fact that I apparently can't use this knowledge, I still found the information interesting. Intriguing, even. So I am glad that I read this book, and I do recommend it, with the caveats listed above.

Disappointed
By Nema Grace
I ordered this for our 4yr old going off to school and didn't read it first. As we read it together, I didn't like the constant references to "what will they think of my clothes?" "what will they think of me?" (rather than worrying about anything of more importance) until the end, when it dawned on me that the little girl was really the teacher.......however, the 4 yr old didn't make the connection at all and I doubt if any 4 0r 5 yr old would. I returned the book, feeling that it was a bit too confusing for this age group.

My four-year-old daughter loves it.
By F. Bridgeford
Absolutely loved this book! My 4 year old daughter had me read it over & over again. The storyline & artwork were tied together extremely tightly; the drawings matched the story very well.

This book clearly shows the various anxieties that a child would have going to school, and that they really are the same as "some grown-ups".

My daughter loved it. The story led her to ask questions about grown-ups and express her nervousness about starting school, as well as her understanding that EVERYONE, including adults, experience the same anxieties.

My wife, an elementary school teacher, also loved this book.

Very well written book.
If a four year old can relate, comprehend & make the connections between her life, and that of which is in the story, the effectiveness of the author is obvious.

Great twist!
By Jennifer Keane
I loved this book for my daughter starting pre-school. She was so suprised at the end as I was too! I brought it to work with me (I'm a Language Arts teacher) to share with our Kinder teachers and decided to read it to my middle school students. They thought it was so cool that the narrator was the teacher! (Of course we discussed literary elements to make it relevant to them.) My Assistant Principal happened to stop in when I was reading it and she adored the book and wants to order it for the school library. I thought it was very creative and I hope to see more books from this author!

Very good book!
By AmberW
As a Pre-Vet student I use this book quite a bit for my Livestock Entomology class. The pictures are pretty awsome! I really think this is a good investment if your an entomology fan or in a class. I also like that the insect orders are broken into different chapters. I currently finished a lab on dog heartworm and this book has a chapter on mosquitoes which was very helpful to me! Overall a very good buy!

Excellent textbook!
By Deborah Merritt
This textbook is very easy to read and understand. It is laid out in manner that makes sense and is easy to follow along with. The images go well with the text. My one caution, however, is that you don't try to use solely this book for insect morphology. It discusses mouthparts and other details related to disease/parasite infection and transmission, and it does not explain the morphological differences between insect species within the same family or order. I would recommend this text to any veterinary or medical student!

Heritage, by Sean Brock

New York Times best seller
Winner, James Beard Foundation Award, Best Book of the Year in American Cooking
Winner, IACP Julia Child First Book Award

Sean Brock is the chef behind the game-changing restaurants Husk and McCrady’s, and his first book offers all of his inspired recipes. With a drive to preserve the heritage foods of the South, Brock cooks dishes that are ingredient-driven and reinterpret the flavors of his youth in Appalachia and his adopted hometown of Charleston. The recipes include all the comfort food (think food to eat at home) and high-end restaurant food (fancier dishes when there’s more time to cook) for which he has become so well-known. Brock’s interpretation of Southern favorites like Pickled Shrimp, Hoppin’ John, and Chocolate Alabama Stack Cake sit alongside recipes for Crispy Pig Ear Lettuce Wraps, Slow-Cooked Pork Shoulder with Tomato Gravy, and Baked Sea Island Red Peas. This is a very personal book, with headnotes that explain Brock’s background and give context to his food and essays in which he shares his admiration for the purveyors and ingredients he cherishes.

The recipes and stories are a delicious reminder of the pleasure to be found in good ingredients, honest cooking, and staying close to home.”
—Daniel Patterson, chef and author of Coi

“Sean is a passionate and true culinary voice in the telling of the past, present, and the future of his beloved South. He has done an admirable job, and an important one, in spreading the gospel and raising the awareness of a great American regional cooking. You don’t have to be from the South to experience the authentic tastes, flavors, and stories using this book.”
—David Kinch, chef and author of Manresa

“This is the real thing. An honest book. A koan to Southern peoples and places. A humble roster of recipes, recollections, and farmer mash notes, from a country-boy-made-good. Start with muscadine and cucumber gazpacho. Move to rabbit stew with black pepper dumplings. Close with black walnut poundcake, drenched with chocolate gravy. You’re in the hands of a master.”
—John T. Edge, coeditor of The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook

Uniquely southern, modern, and elegant
By Deidre512
"Heritage" is a incredible addition to recent cooking literature - Southern themed recipes made with fresh ingredients and beautiful presentations.

After a brief intro by Sean Brock, the book goes straight into a broad spectrum of recipes with a Southern cooking style ingredient baseline. Recipes by chapter are themed by dish type - vegetarian, grain, meat, seafood, canned/pickled, bar food/drinks, and desserts. Each recipe has a brief introduction providing a nice story about the history of the dish and/or why it is meaningful to Sean Brock from his heritage. Several of the recipes in this cookbook are adaptations of recipes of family member's of Sean Brock that shaped his relationship with Southern food and cooking.

Some of the recipes call for very specific brand of ingredients (example: Anson Mills Antebellum Fine Yellow Cornmeal). In the back of the book is a page of resources for where to buy. Based upon this and the variety of ingredients for each dish, you will need to plan ahead to make the recipes.

The instructions for the recipes are extremely clear covering order of steps and how to's in order to get the best results. the pictures provide great visuals for how to plate the dishes. Based upon the complexity of the recipes, the book is more tailored to experienced cooks than beginners.

Many of the recipes in this book can be made with the standard equipment found in your home kitchen. Some recipes do require specialized equipment such as a juice extractor or a sous vide machine.

I recommend this book for foodies who love unique recipes, food presentation, modernist cooking, or just to have as a beautiful read on your coffee table.

Recipes like "Charred beef short ribs with glazed carrots and black ...
By Aniseh Kadivar
The food photography in this book is lovely and some of the ingredients seem interesting. I'm not one to skimp away from complicated recipes but I'm more of a rustic cook and less of a "French Laundry" cook. Recipes like "Charred beef short ribs with glazed carrots and black truffle puree" or "Roasted Duck with turnips, lovage puree, pears, and chestnuts" are a little too fluffy for my taste. I noticed a lot of reviews praising the book without really describing the taste/flavor of the recipes. I'm assuming they haven't attempted cooking anything yet. I didn't bother cooking anything from this book either, mostly because nothing attracted my attention enough to give it a go.

Lovely book in terms of photography, lay out, description etc...just slightly pretentious for me. Which is ironic considering it's entire premise is cooking from your roots and tradition. I doubt they're serving "crispy fried farm eggs with fresh cheese, pickled chanterelles, wild watercress, and red-eye vinaigrette" in the Appalachian mountains, but if they are kudos to them. Overall it seems like it may have potential, just not for me. I'll be returning this one.

Excellent book w/Most ingredients obtainable!
By Lynda M. Breeze
This book is phenomenal! I would buy it again & again! Excellent, doable recipes. Yes some of the recipes are long & complex but I love the challenge & truly if you have the time, such as a weekend it is fun to sit aside the time & make someting unbelievable! With patience & adherence to the directions, the results can be outstanding. My one complaint is some of the ingredients are simply unobtainable. I'd love ramps, but the wild onions don't grow here; same with pokeweed & no alternatives are offered. That's disappointing. I'm making the yellow rice with red cow peas & got the ingredients from Amazon. Now that's easy! However, Amazon offers little to no fresh vegetable, but has started offering meat products! Whooppeee! I got a pork belly; it arrived yesterday in great shape. I'll write my review after I prepare it this weekend.

The stories and pictures in this book add greatly to the pleasure of reading it. I read cookbooks like novels, I love them. This one truly delivers. The author embraces a love affair with food that I share. I would rather have one beautiful meal a day than an endless buffet of mundane fare. If you share my passion for excellent food you will nit be disappointed in this book. It even elevates polenta to a level higher than I have seen before. All I can say is dig in! My message to the author, when using ingredients that are impossible for many people to obtain either provide sources or alternatives. It is cruel to leave tempting but impossible to prepare dishes in your cookbook! Excellent book overall.
I made several recipes from the book & they turned out beautifully! I had no trouble obtaining the ingredients, got them from Amazon! I do tend to change up recipes to suit my families taste. I made the polenta but instead of water I used 1 cup of cream, 1 cup of milk & I cup chicken broth. After the polenta was finished I added Parmesan reggiano cheese and topped it with ramps! Delicious & creamy. I also made his prime rib after special ordering my meat, in order to get prime grade. It was magnificent! I recommend you give it a try, it's soo good!
