Hard to find; worth the effort

This book is hard to come by, but well worth all the searching if you are planning to take the DANTES principles of Public Speaking Exam for college credit. Jack Rudman's guides have been useful to me in taking (and passing) five different DANTES exams. For anyone who doesn't know, DANTES are like CLEP but originally started by the military. Official info can be found at getcollegecredit.com on the program.
This guides is comprehensive. It provides copies of all the official preparation materials provided by the Chauncey Group (who administers the test), along with many practice tests taken from old exams, examples of figures of speech and other important parts of public speaking, articles and excerpts from books and magazine about public speaking, as well as a glossary of public speaking basics. If you find yourself getting stuck on any of the practice tests in certain areas, look in the glossary to help review that subject. For this exam you will have to give a speech on tape on a topic chosen by the Chauncey Group. You must pass both the written and oral sections to earn credit.

Best Study Guide for the Public Speaking Dante Test

I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is wanting to take the Public Speaking Dante Exam. This book provided all teh informtion in order to blow away the test. I was really suprised that it was helpful as it was. I wish I would have found this book before my countless hours of searching book stores for a good stdy guide.

A poor excuse for a study guide

Unlike Comex's excellent CLEP study guides, the amateurish study guide for the DANTES Principles of Public Speaking test was hardly useful at all. Essentially, this "guide" is a bunch of practice tests spiral bound together. There's no rhyme or reason to the order of questions, no grouping by subjects, heavy repetition of questions, and it even changes fonts from test to test.

I could look over the sloppy presentation if there was some useful information inside, but unlike the CLEP guide, which gave an overview of the fundamentals of the subject, the DANTES guide has nothing but questions and answers. If you want to know why you got an answer right or wrong, you have to do your own research. If they had made that clear up front, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying this so-called guide.

The guide is probably useful in that you're bound to pick up some answers by sheer repetition, but if you buy it expecting to dominate the actual DANTES test or actually learn something, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

FOLLOW UP: I finally got my test results back, and I passed by a pretty decent margin. I suppose that means this guide is a success, but I still think it's pretty shabby.

Excellent French Language book for Teachers and Students

As a French tutor and French native, I love this book. It teaches all aspects of the French language: Conversation, Grammar, Vocabulary and includes excellent Exercises (with answers in the back).
I recommend it highly to everyone, both beginners and those wanting to perfect his or her skills.

I love French.

I love this book. It is easy to read and it is easy to carry. I use it as a reference book because I have never taken French before. Sometimes when I am unable to understand, the authors' explanations are simple and easy to read. I really like the book. I also have the Spanish one, and I like it too.

Like wringing a sponge and soaking in the French

Hello. I have had this book for a few months now. I would like to say that it has been a big help. First of all, I'm a junior in high school who's taking French and desperately needed a study guide. Well this was it. What I love about this is all the exercises that it comes with. Every chapter has around 12 sections of exercises where you get to practice what you have acquired the few pages before. Thanks to this book (and summer tutoring), I have learned enough French that I was able to skip second year of French at my school.

Some important notes:
If you don't know anything about the French language, you'll find this book a hard one (Even though it's a Step-by-Step self study guide). For one thing, there is not a book in the world that can ever teach you the pronunciation needed. As for me, I had my French teacher give me a whole summer of French tutoring for free. That really helped with correct enunciation. I would recommend to the absolute beginner (especially those who are monolingual) to get in contact with mentor to help explain the difficult part of prounounciation. As you may or may not know, 80% of French words have mute endings that might or might not get pronounced depending on the next syllable. You really want someone to guide you if you're a beginner. Also, before you dive into this book, understand these few concepts:

(First List)
- Verbal Aspects
- Verbal Tenses
- Verbal Moods (especially the subjunctive)
- Direct Objects
- Indirect Objects
- Antecedent
- Relative clauses
- Verb Valency

If you have a curious mind (like the one I do) Google and learn the following:

(Second List)
- Why does French have grammatical gender?
- Why does every adjective have to agree in number and in gender with the main noun?

You see, by learning the things in the first list, I was better able to grasp the difficult aspects required to speak any language (Pun intended). Believe it or not, verbs are like rocket-science. They are really hard to understand unless you practice them everyday. This book doesn't cover the items in the first list very well. I recommend you look them up before beginning this book.

The second list, you curious minded folks, is not actually going to help you learn any French nor make this book a better read. (Yes, you read that right.) Instead, this list (the 2nd one) will help keep you from getting discouraged of learning French. By knowing and acknowledging the fundamental principles driving Romantic languages, you'll understand why French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and many other languages have abstract nouns with sex (chairs have boobies? doors are chicks now?) that we, English speaking folk, find so foreign yet so enticing. (Yes, in French, the chair you are sitting on is female and the door as well. Treat them nice!)

To conclude, I recommend this book. Who wouldn't, n'est pas? [neh-pAH]

No where is this more apparent than in an extended love poem, in this edition in a fresh readable

I acquired a used softcover copy from Goodwill via amazon. First, Ramon Llull is one of the most-studied of Mediterranean medieval mystics, and despite the passage of many centuries, he remains as controversial today as in his age. He was alternately accused of heresy by the Inquisition, and proposed for canonisation by the Roman Catholic Church. Second, by his own account, he had an illumination experience in which he was inspired with a philosophical Art or Work, which formed the foundation for a structure of logic to elucidate Christic theology, which he hoped to use to convert the "Sarracens", for which purpose he learned and wrote in Arabic, and travelled widely. From the perspective of this writer, other theological writers bog down in his significance within Christianity, as he apparently failed in his life work to convert any Muslims to Christianity ... what is most intriguing is that in his attempts to understand Moslems, especially the mystics among them, Llull ended up not unlike them. No where is this more apparent than in an extended love poem, in this edition in a fresh readable, accurate translation, of an extended Sufi poem actually placed in the mouth of a fictional hermit Blaquernas. who admits at least admiration for Sufi mystical poetics: it could be a re-writing of the Sawanih of Ahmad al-Ghazali or the Maqamat al-Qulub of an-Nuri. As such, Llull is a precursor to later Catholic mystics like Teresa of Avila and Juan de la Cruz who also drew from Islamic mystical literature for their work. This volume is an abridgement of a two-volume publication by the same author, and although I have not compared the two editions to see what was set aside, this book seems to contain everything an interested reader could hope for, and makes for a very satisfying account of Llull's life, teachings, and influences. I would recommend it just for the new translation of The Book Of The Lover And The Beloved. - Daniel O'Donnell, Portland Oregon USA

Hard to Get your Arms Around

For all practical purposes, this book is the primary introduction to Ramon Llull available in English. Llull is a difficult figure to come to terms with, for various reasons, and I must admit that I left this book feeling a bit more confused than I was when I started.
There are two components of this book: Llull's writings themselves (not by any means all of them, which would require much more space, and Professor Bonner has already released a two-volume anthology in addition to this book) and Professor Bonner's commentary. From the very start, it's difficult for us to even begin to conceive of Llull's place in his own world. Llull was born in Mallorca, which had only been reconquered from the Muslims a few years before his birth, thus raising the prospect that he experienced some cultural crosscurrents in his youth. He spent his earlier years as a courtier, and more specifically as a troubador, which also could raise suspicions about his background. After a conversion experience, Llull became a tertiary Franciscan, a designation defining a semi-monastic state not necessarily in permanent orders; presumably, he was considered too old to enter regular orders (he was past thirty). He spoke Arabic fluently, and a great deal of his work is in Arabic.
Professor Bonner defines him primarily as having one major goal in his life: conversion of the Moors, and defines him as a "polemicist", in the terms of the day. On reading his works, one feels that the polemic is missing, and in fact he apparently has so much sympathy for Islam that it looks as if he may have been a crypto-Muslim himself. Llull himself cites Sufi influence in some of his work, and one of his major works - "The Book of the Lover and his Beloved" - bears a title that sounds like a direct translation from Arabic.
Llull's major life's work was his "Ars" (which apparently means something in this context like style of presentation) and it is in this area that the book really falls down, in my opinion. Professor Bonner makes constant reference to Llull's "Ars" without ever going into any specific examples as to what it is. It is apparently some system of thought that is supposed to explain all other systems of thought, and it involves the use of diagrams. Based on what I have found in other works it is true that Llull's "Ars" is apparently quite abstruse, and I can only presume that Professor Bonner didn't feel he had enough space to do it justice in this one-volume presentation. However, I was left with a sense that it was either something akin to the Jewish Kabbala or else a thirteenth-century version of Abraham Maslow's diagrams. Neither of these images leaves me any further on.
Llull was both praised and condemned by later generations as an alchemist, a charge which Professor Bonner dismisses by showing that the alchemical works attributed to him were forgeries. Llull has also been beatified by the Vatican, but he has never been canonized; one wonders whether this is was because of the whiff of alchemy in his background or whether his thought was too far out of the Christian mainstream, like Meister Eckhart.
Llull is also considered the founder of Catalan literature, a fact which Professor Bonner devotes no space to, and it would be interesting to place him within this perspective. All in all, I found Professor Bonner's explanations told me too little, and they didn't really prepare me for what I encountered when reading Llull's texts. It would be interesting to see if there is any serious study of Llull's work by a competent Hispanic Arabist on the level of Luce Lopez-Baralt or Father Asin Palacios.
I can't say that the book cleared things up for me. Having said that, I have no recommendation to the reader where he or she should go to find out more. Perhaps Professor Bonner's two-volume work provides more background, but to all appearances it is a specialist work and probably more than the casual reader would care to deal with. There are some websites in Spanish and Catalan that I've encountered that go into some detail regarding the "Ars", but I suspect some New Age revisionism in their content, which is certainly not a charge that can be levelled at Professor Bonner.
In the end, I opt for three stars for the work. If you're interested in Llull this is as good a place to start as any, and better than most, no doubt.

Good translation with helpful background info

Wonderful collection of five of Llull's most important work. Bonner's translations are concise and fluid, very helpful. His introductory remarks to each book fill in historical and biographical information, so you end up with a bio of Llull in addition to his actual writings. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to read Llull in English for the first time.

Disappointing

I really wanted to enjoy this book, it had all the ingredients of a fascinating story, the enigmatic cover of a woman alone on a beach, an unrequited love, a cop looking for a world famous art thief, set in France and the USA, obsessive characters ........... but in the end I just felt quite disappointed.

I thought the main storyline was too coincidental, it just didn't feel plausible to me. If I said what it was it would be a huge spoiler.

I didn't really empathise with the main characters either, Gabrielle, Martin and Archibald. I didn't feel that I really knew them any more by the end than I did at the beginning. They didn't seem to know what they thought and kept changing their minds so I didn't know their inner mind workings, and therefore I found myself not caring too much about what happened to them.

I also wondered whether there was such a thing as product placement in a book? I lost count of the number of times a particular brand of fizzy drink was drunk, or a certain mp3 player was used, I actually found that quite annoying by the end.

I did think it was well translated though, if i didn't know it was originally written in French, I wouldn't have known, the writing flowed very easily and the dialogue seemed natural.

So, even though it was not my type of book I'm sure that some people would enjoy it, after all the cover reads that `over 1 million copies sold worldwide'!

Strange Book of Several Parts, not all of them Good

This is definitely a book of several distinct parts. The first part covers the start of the love affair which is at the heart of the story but is related in a strangely unemotional manner, almost one dimensional. In this early section of the book it is very hard to relate to either of the characters involved or feel bothered about what is happening.

The story then develops and involves a skilful art thief and his relentless pursuer. This again starts off rather slowly without involving the reader significantly, but builds momentum as it becomes clear that there are greater dimensions to the affair than there seem to be on the surface and quite a lot to the interaction between the pursuer and the pursued. The story becomes quite a good read at this stage.

The final part is seriously weird as compared with the fairly worldly occurrences preceding it. I will not drop in any spoilers, but trust me, seriously weird. I guess the conclusion was a reasonably satisfactory and tidy outcome under these circumstances.

So to summarise, this is a strange book which does fall into several distinct parts, not all of which will appeal to all readers. Personally I enjoyed the middle section and was rather surprised when the story subsequently went off in the direction it did. The latter part of the book was interesting but unexpected. Quite a short book, but a worthwhile read in my opinion. I am not sure I will be seeking out the author's other works though.

A Love Story Thriller - Perfect for the Beach

I'm not sure I've ever read a love story thriller before, but in Where Would I be Without You? Guillaume Musso cleverly combines a love story that spans 30 years, with an action-packed thriller.

When Martin and Gabrielle fall in love one summer during their college years little do they know that their paths will cross again many years in the future as Martin tracks an elusive art thief across continents in a bid to bring him to justice.

I'm always nervous reading books that have been translated from their original language (in this case French) but in this instance nothing is lost in translation. From the whirlwind love story to the twists and turns of the thriller I was caught up in the plot from the very first line, and really didn't want to put this one down.

There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right up until the end. Another reviewer calls Where Would I be Without You? by Guillaume Musso "the perfect book for a trip to the beach", and I agree with them completely.

Excellent book on Tiki, though a bit artsy

This book is a must have for anyone interested in Tiki or kitsch art. Describing themselves as "urban archaeologists" seeking remnants of Tiki culture, the authors provide a fun and informative look at this vanishing art form. The book does an acceptable job presenting the evolutionary history of Tiki, from the 1920s to the present. Key events, such as the establishment of Trader Vic's, and the Kon Tiki craze of the late 40s, are looked at in further detail. There is also a good look at the "artifacts" of Tiki art and architecture throughout the United States. The book is packed with color photos of Tiki mugs, matchbooks, buildings, and much more.
However, the book does lean a bit too much towards making the book eye candy. The Book of Tiki uses intense colors, and ultra-hip page compositions that make it difficult to read (typically Taschen, but I still found it distracting). Also, a consolidation of information would have made it easier to reference, such as a table differentiating the different "Trader" Tiki businesses. Also, some of the text ("Exotica and the Tiki style were denounced as contrived rituals of the imperialist establishment at the same time that the Vietnam war developed into and ugly mistake, with native huts and palm trees burning on TV."), had me wondering if they were being tounge-in-cheek, or were actually serious.
Nevertheless, this book is the current bible for Tiki aficionados, and is well worth having on your bookshelf.

Like the topic it covers, this book is a treasure

If you have any passing interest in the tiki culture of the 50's and 60's this book is for you. Containing hundreds of rare photographs, matchbook covers, swizzle sticks, and more, this book stands unparalled in its field.
About the only thing missing is a chapter on the Exotica music which closely tied to this culture - the tunes of the era get only a very passing reference.
That said, YOU WILL NOT REGRET purchasing this book.

Love this play!

I absolutely love this play! It is very simple and can be easily adapted to any stage. If you are looking for something simple to put on that doesn't have a very big cast this is the play to do! It is mostly made for older teens and adults however so keep that in mind.
