Review
"They warmed your soul with Chicken Soup. Now the brilliant motivational team of Canfield and Hansen reveal the secret to getting everything your heart desires."
-- Ken Blanchard, co-author of The One Minute Manager

About the Author
Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen are motivational speakers who conduct seminars around the world. Their Chicken Soup books have spent several months at the top of the New York Times and many other national bestseller lists. They are also the authors of The Aladdin Factor. This writing team has over 4 million copies of their books in print. They both live in California.

From AudioFile
The CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL authors describe the benefits of asking for what you want through a good mixture of success stories from their personal lives, their consulting practices and the success-story repertoire. This particular adaptation and the lively, alternating voices of the two authors make the program move along quickly; both men are excellent storytellers. There is a corny Aladdin dramatization at the onset of the program, and one of the authors indulges in some overacting, but this fits with the program's inspirational tone. Even listeners who aren't devotees of "you can do it" tapes will enjoy the stories and learn a few negotiating tips in the bargain. T.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

I loved the section about relationships as it is more often ...
By Patelli Paschal
Even though I'm kind of biased on the author's work from reading Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul in many of its incarnations this little book was different.I found it was more of a sectional stand-alone on just about any category you want to find the motivation to passionately ask about. I loved the section about relationships as it is more often than not a sore point for men like myself who try to find the"right" words in a personal situation. There are other areas I also plan to read and incorporate in the language of everyday life.if you want a "hokey" tome about meaning or a get rich quick fix steer away.If you want honest insight put it in your Amazon cart now!

No New Information
By Christopher
If your looking for new information about the law of attraction or new information anywhere in or around that subject, you will not find it in this book. The book just has a lot of basic information about the law of attraction, nothing you can't find for free on the internet. I wanted to like this book, but it was the same information I had read and heard so many other places.

This is a 6" by 9" restored and re-formatted edition of Alan Calvert's original 1924 classic: SUPER STRENGTH. The text remains exactly as written in the original 1924 edition. This book is considered by many strength historians to be "The Bible" of modern muscle building and weight training. The great John C. Grimek kept only one book on his book shelf by his desk at York Barbell and it was his copy of SUPER STRENGTH. This book is truly one of the most influential in the history of the Iron Game and Physical Culture. Alan Calvert was one of the most important and most under-rated figures in the history of physical culture. He was the founder and publisher of STRENGTH MAGAZINE and the founder of MILO BARBELL COMPANY in the early 1900's. MILO was the first mass produced plate loaded modern barbell. STRENGTH magazine was an early leader in physical culture and many famous legends of the Iron Game such as Mark Berry, John C. Grimek, and many others, got their start there. Awesome! The Classics now Available!
By Bill
My first reaction Super Strength from Physical Culture Books was "Wow!" Talk about impressive! Staring me in the face was the Iron Game classic by Alan Calvert in a modern super high quality book format. I have personally seen several other attempts to re-publish such classics as Super Strength and frankly they looked like cheap and cheesy copy machine reproductions. Everyone can now have the Iron Game classics in super high quality readable reproductions that will last on your bookshelf. Physical Culture Books has certainly hit the nail on the head with how they are reproducing the classics of the Iron Game!

As far as the person claiming there were a lot of typo's....

There are probably a few minor scanning errors that might have been missed but certainly no "spelling mistakes" unless the word was mis-spelled in the original book. I think those that are truly interested in the Iron Game would rather have a book that is almost perfect with a few missed minor scanning errors than a PERFECT book that costs ten dollars more (especially when the error is so minor that it has no effect on the reading.)

Classic Stuff
By Sisyphus Lives
There are two main genres when it comes to books on weight/strength training: 1- Training for the competitive lifter. 2- Training for those who want to look strong and freaky. I'm not interested in the latter, and I don't have the gifts for competitive Olympic lifting or Powerlifting in my 50s. Calvert may have leaned toward the bodybuilding side, but the most valuable content of his book is geared more toward functional strength, fitness and health. This is what I look for in a training publication, not vanity. The best lat spread and symmetry in the world won't help you in stacking hay bales.

Super Strength was written in an era when athletics wasn't polluted with chemistry. Calvert's views on sensible diet are refreshing to read in this day and age. Man's teeth indicate that he can eat meat, vegetable, grain, and nut. Eat a good balance of the above, and 'calories are calories'. No need to chuck down special proteins, eclectic vitamins, amino acids, or hormones.

In addition to the restoration of the text, I also liked the old photographs, and seeing what various "lost" lifts look like. Physical Cultrue Books has done a fine job in restoring written works of Alan Calvert, Georg Hackenschmidt, Bob Peoples, and others, so information on sensible training does not become lost or corrupted. My hat is off to the publisher.

A Great Book
By Bob Whelan
This is one of the best books you can read if you want real strength training information. I didn't notice many errors at all but if there were some they were probably minor like an i showing as a 1 in a scan. Worth every penny and more. You can't go wrong here unless you are extremely picky. See a sample for yourself. *** Click on the LOOK INSIDE above to get a feel for the real quality of this book.

Manifolds fall naturally into two classes depending on whether they can be fitted with a distance measuring function or not. The former, metrisable manifolds, and especially compact manifolds, have been intensively studied by topologists for over a century, whereas the latter, non-metrisable manifolds, are much more abundant but have a more modest history, having become of increasing interest only over the past 40 years or so. The first book on this topic, this book ranges from criteria for metrisability, dynamics on non-metrisable manifolds, Nyikos’s Bagpipe Theorem and whether perfectly normal manifolds are metrisable to structures on manifolds, especially the abundance of exotic differential structures and the dearth of foliations on the long plane. A rigid foliation of the Euclidean plane is described. This book is intended for graduate students and mathematicians who are curious about manifolds beyond the metrisability wall, and especially the use of Set Theory as a tool.

Review

“The book is well-organized with two appendices: the first one collects all necessary topological results, and the second one provides preliminaries on set theory. In addition, each chapter has its own abstract and references. … this book is so-far the only monograph in the literature which gives a comprehensive treatment on non-metrizable manifolds. It is recommended to those readers who have general knowledge on manifolds as topological objects and are curious about what happens beyond the wall of metrizability.” (Jiling Cao, zbMATH 1336.57031, 2016)

“First of its kind, this volume by Gauld (Univ. of Auckland, New Zealand) both synthesizes and improves upon the journal literature, demonstrating clearly that non-metrizable manifolds admit profitable study from a variety of vantages (e.g., set theory, differential topology) and exhibit rich and surprising behaviors, using theory built on, but hardly reducible to, the metrizable case. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals/practitioners.” (D. V. Feldman, Choice, Vol. 53 (2), October, 2015)

As the tools and techniques of structural biophysics assume greater roles in biological research and a range of application areas, learning how proteins behave becomes crucial to understanding their connection to the most basic and important aspects of life.

With more than 350 color images throughout, Introduction to Proteins: Structure, Function, and Motion presents a unified, in-depth treatment of the relationship between the structure, dynamics, and function of proteins. Taking a structural–biophysical approach, the authors discuss the molecular interactions and thermodynamic changes that transpire in these highly complex molecules.

The text incorporates various biochemical, physical, functional, and medical aspects. It covers different levels of protein structure, current methods for structure determination, energetics of protein structure, protein folding and folded state dynamics, and the functions of intrinsically unstructured proteins. The authors also clarify the structure–function relationship of proteins by presenting the principles of protein action in the form of guidelines.

This comprehensive, color book uses numerous proteins as examples to illustrate the topics and principles and to show how proteins can be analyzed in multiple ways. It refers to many everyday applications of proteins and enzymes in medical disorders, drugs, toxins, chemical warfare, and animal behavior. Downloadable questions for each chapter are available at CRC Press Online.

Review

"I’ve just lately used this textbook for a presentation on electrostatics. Although I have an organic background, I discovered that the explanations of electrostatic interactions are very clear and informative. The language isn’t too technical and may be easily understood by biology students. The textbook covers numerous examples and colorful illustrations, which made it easy to understand the principles discussed. The book is well organized in chapters for all the fundamental topics. I feel this book would be appropriate for any undergraduate and graduate scholar who’s keen on proteins. … It’s complete, easy to observe and (something I at least discover uncommon for textbooks) pleasing to read. The authors don’t shrink back from any subjects, but clarify things in a straightforward method supported by ample examples. Highly recommended."
―Physics Book Reviews at dowdawgs.com, May 2013

Introduction to Proteins is an excellent, state-of-the-art choice for students, faculty, or researchers needing a monograph on protein structure. …The book is clear, well organized, aptly illustrated in color, and a pleasure to read. The first two chapters are an impressive textbook unto themselves … The book is thoroughly documented with citations to the literature gathered at the end of each chapter. … Overall, this is an immensely informative, thoroughly researched, up-to-date text, with broad coverage and remarkable depth. Introduction to Proteins would provide an excellent basis for an upper level or graduate course on protein structure, and a valuable addition to the libraries of professionals interested in this centrally important field.
―Eric Martz, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, Vol. 40, 2012

This is an important book. … This book captures in a very accessible way a growing body of literature on the structure, function and motion of proteins, and links this to more established paradigms such as a reader might find in a mainstream biochemistry text. … The text is littered with excellent examples of the wider relevance of the material covered … . The book is exceptionally well written … I learned new things from each chapter. … a superb publication that would be very useful to undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and instructors involved in structural biology or biophysics courses or in research on protein structure–function relationships. I would recommend it highly.
―David Sheehan, ChemBioChem, 2011

The book by Kessel and Ben-Tal offers a unique combination of structure, thermodynamics and biology. I was impressed both by the breadth of the topics covered and by the depth in which they are treated. General principles are made intuitively clear based on well-chosen examples, many of them having relevance to disease. The book could fit well as a textbook in structural biology and molecular biophysics courses.
―Barry Honig, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA

… the book provides general guidelines for understanding protein structure and demonstrates how we can use the structure to phrase testable hypotheses about biological function. … The repeated use of the same example makes it easier for the reader to grasp the general principles. The book gives a coherent picture of each topic … [and] includes ample references, making it possible for the interested reader to dig deeply into various topics. The book also covers structural aspects of intrinsically unstructured proteins and how this property facilitates their biological function. … The book provides background in cell biology, basic chemistry and thermodynamics, making it useful for newcomers to the protein structure field who want to catch up quickly. … it [is also] easy for experts to dive into the more specialized aspects quickly. … The book provides references to user-friendly web tools in the field. The publisher’s website provides exercises on both theory and practice. Sample solutions and PowerPoint presentations are available for qualified teachers. These make the book attractive as the main textbook in an undergraduate course on protein structure. Perhaps also for parts of freshman biochemistry. … useful as supplement for many undergraduate and graduate courses.

Excellent Structural Biology book !
By Gideonla
The book aims to provide the reader with a detailed background and current understandings in the field of protein structure and dynamics from the biophysical approach.

As someone who has recently entered the research field of protein dynamics and felt a bit lacking in the necessary background knowledge (especially thermodynamics and thermo-statistics) I really appreciated how broad-based the book is but at the same time manages to stay on point and only introduce relevant principals that apply directly to a better understanding in the field of protein structure and dynamics.

The problem I have with other books in this area is that they usually tackle the subject from a narrow aspect (strictly biochemical or cell-biology) and I could not find a book (or course at my university for that matter) that really managed to integrate all the necessary background and knowledge sources together.

I found the book to be well structured covering the different topics in a logical founded order beginning with explaining what proteins are in general continuing to cover fundamental topics in chemistry and thermodynamics and finally integrating it all into current understating.
Every topic introduced in the book is accompanied with relevant biological examples and color images greatly facilitating comprehension, even the math parts which are detrimental to the understanding of the physics (and unfortunately usually avoided in biology text books) are broken down into easy to digest steps and accompanied with detailed explanations

The book manages to walk the fine line of dealing and explaining sometimes complex topics in an easy to follow manner without being shallow and over simplistic, so both the complete novice and the more experienced reader can find their requirements met.

In short, This book can make a great text book to accompany a protein structure course or, if your are like me taking your first steps in this field or just plain curious an excellent introductory book.

Excellent Textbook for Structural Bioinformatics of Proteins
By Remo Rohs
I have read this book with great interest and have decided to use this textbook in my classes on Structural Bioinformatics at the University of Southern California. Kessel and Ben-Tal have succeeded in putting material together, which I was not able to find in any other textbook. Focused on protein structure, the book combines aspects of structural and computational biology, which makes this a unique contribution. As for the level of detail provided in the book, complicated structural and biophysical aspects are well explained both in words and graphical illustrations. This textbook can therefore be used both in undergraduate and graduate student teaching. The book provides a comprehensive overview on what is known about general principles that determine protein structure, globular proteins, disordered proteins, protein-protein interactions, and in complex with various ligands. It provides guidelines for understanding the energetics of protein folding and stability; it describes models of molecular recognition and allostery as a basis 'for understanding protein-ligand interactions; and it explains biological functionality in these terms.' The book covers protein structure from water-soluble to membrane proteins, from globular to fibrilar proteins and from 'well behaved' to 'natively unstructured' proteins.' The book provides a deep understanding of protein structure, dynamics, 'and function. General principles are made intuitively clear based on 'specific examples. Each example is 'discussed within various contexts throughout the book and eventually 'the reader obtains a wide view on these carefully selected cases.' One interesting feature of the book is the emphasis on diseases. 'This includes explanations of the effects of genetic mutations on 'protein folding, stability, and dynamics as well as a brief introduction to rational drug discovery.' The book connects complicated aspects of structural biology to trivia as much as possible, without deviating too much from the main rout, making it a 'nice read. I can tell that my students liked it a lot.

Great Book Covers All Its Bases
By islaymaker
As a graduate student it is often difficult to wade through the combination of unnecessary information and overly specific topics. "Introduction to Proteins" is a great book that provides the basic information needed to delve deep into the importance of protein structure and function without getting bogged down in overly specific details. The illustrations are interesting and colorful as well as relevant. This book covers topics ranging from secondary structure hydrogen bonding patterns to what force field you may want to use for your molecular dynamics simulations. Overall this a great book for any student looking to get a little deeper into protein structure and function without sacrificing clarity or background.

Why Sinatra Matters, by Pete Hamill

In honor of Sinatra's 100th birthday, Pete Hamill's classic tribute returns with a new introduction by the author.

In this unique homage to an American icon, journalist and award-winning author Pete Hamill evokes the essence of Sinatra--examining his art and his legend from the inside, as only a friend of many years could do. Shaped by Prohibition, the Depression, and war, Francis Albert Sinatra became the troubadour of urban loneliness. With his songs, he enabled millions of others to tell their own stories, providing an entire generation with a sense of tradition and pride belonging distinctly to them.

With a new look and a new introduction by Hamill, this is a rich and touching portrait that lingers like a beautiful song.

From Publishers Weekly
Like a musical Elements of Style, Hamill's slim meditation on Frank Sinatra is confident, smart and seamless. Since (and immediately before) Sinatra's death in May 1998, countless tributes have been made to the singer; Hamill (A Drinking Life) seems to be writing to set the record straight, for he knew Sinatra and, before that, knew the singer's music. But Hamill doesn't fawn over Sinatra the way other, younger writers have recently done. Rather, he elegantly tells the Sinatra story, dwelling on the singer's best recordings, dismissing "the Rat Pack, the swagger, the arrogance, the growing fortune, the courtiers," because in the end, he writes, they are "of little relevance." What matters, according to Hamill, is the music, chiefly that of Sinatra's early mature years, when the singer released his celebrated albums on the Capitol label. Where a starry-eyed author might vaguely praise these albums for their pathos and vulnerability, Hamill points out that, before the singer's Capitol comeback years, Sinatra's fans were almost exclusively young women. The stubborn, post-Ava Gardner heartache of Sinatra's later records, however, with their lack of self-pity, gained Sinatra a chiefly male audience. Of this, perhaps the singer's greatest musical period, Hamill writes that Sinatra "perfected the role of the Tender Tough Guy.... Before him, that archetype did not exist in American popular culture." That may be true, but Hamill sets his book apart from the many others about Old Blue Eyes by tempering intelligent superlatives with the retelling of touching, revelatory moments the two men shared. Hamill's is a definitive introduction to Sinatra's work.

From Library Journal
The barrage of recent Frank Sinatra books has resulted in his being the most written-about celebrity in the world after Monroe and Presley. Hamill's slim essay is distinguished from other recent works by its objective focus on the components of the late singer's enduring musical legacy. Veteran writer Hamill (e.g., A Drinking Life, LJ 1/94) is comfortable in the New York City milieu of late nights, saloons, and prizefighters, and he has captured the essence of Sinatra, who created something that was not there before he arrived: an urban American voice. The book's strength is its insight into and evocation of the Italian American immigrant experience that had such a strong influence on Sinatra. Minor weaknesses are an oversimplified examination of prejudice and an underdeveloped 1974 vignette about Ava Gardner that fails to make its point. From Booklist
A combination biography and cultural analysis by the author of A Drinking Life (1993). In Hamill's view, Frank Sinatra was important for two reasons. First, Sinatra represented the fulfillment of the American Dream. A first-generation Italian, young Sinatra experienced anti-immigrant biases firsthand. Yet for all its flaws, America still offered substantial opportunity, and by the time he was 15, Sinatra dreamed of singing professionally. Of course, he accomplished this and more, but throughout, Hamill asserts, Sinatra the superstar never forgot his humble roots. Second, Sinatra gave us a new sound, the "urban American voice." When Sinatra broke onto the scene in the early 1940s, the avuncular and soothing Bing Crosby was the singer. But Sinatra's songs were very different, edgier, more passionate, with a fair amount of swagger, yet always returning to what Hamill argues was Sinatra's central theme, loneliness. A heartfelt and intelligent tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes. Brian McCombie

There will never be another...
By JR Pinto
I only saw my hero, Frank Sinatra, perform once. It was at the end of his career - and his life. It was a strange evening; he was obviously at the end - he couldn't remember the words to his songs or read the teleprompter. Few people left however - the evening soon became about us - his fans - letting him know that we still loved him. "I LOVE YOU FRANK!" a huge, middle-aged, rough-looking man yelled out during a pause. Sinatra, taken aback by the violence of the outburst, chuckled and replied, "I love you too, pal." As Pete Hamill once pointed out, "Seeing Sinatra in ruins is like seeing the Coliseum in ruins - it's still magnificent."
Why Sinatra Matters is a must-read for any Sinatra-phile. In the Overture, Hamill cites Sinatra's death as the impetus for writing this book. He saw all these young reporters from MTV and VH1 doing stories on Sinatra (obviously prepared in advance) telling the world Sinatra was important, without really understanding why. It certainly wasn't just because he did it "his way."
This is a very short book. As Hamill points out it is not a "definitive biography" - although once he was in talks with Sinatra to write just that. It is, as the title plainly states, an explanation of why Sinatra matters - artistically and culturally - and why he always will. In terms of Culture, Hamill reminds the reader of a time when America felt it was morally obligated to persecute Italians - Sinatra helped change all that. Musically, the reasons are more complex. To put it succinctly, no one ever sounded like Sinatra before.
The book is great because it also sheds light on Sinatra the man, who is often lost in the obscurity of his own public image. He was not just some gruff tough guy - a kind of idiot savant who could churn out a great recording in one take. He was a fiercely intelligent, well-read, well-cultured, self-educated man who worked hard at his craft. The most enjoyable parts of the book are the conversations Hamill recounts between himself and Sinatra. Most shocking of all - to me at least - was to imagine Sinatra using the F-word!

A wonderful read--like an old song
By Robert Wellen
Pete Hamill, beyond a doubt, is an excellent writer. He does a wonderful job here. The book is part bio, part history of immigrants in America, and part memoir. It works on all levels. Hamill treats Frank with the respect he deserves. The book is not a gossipy memoir--Kitty Kelly fans should look elsewhere. Instead, he makes the important arguement that Sinatra gave voice to first, a generation, and then an entire country. His artisty is what matters. The myth of the man is fun and gets most the attention, but that is besides the point for Hamill. And he is right. We all talk about the "Sinatra in a hat" (as Hamill dubs him) and the Rat Pack--but the music endures. It is, argues Hamill, what matters in the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. It is what will stand the test of time and give voice to a thousand broken dreams, hearts, and help us--like Frank after the Fall--get back up and start all over again. Thanks, Pete Hamill for getting it right.

THE MOST LUCID, INTELLIGENT LOOK AT THE LEGEND
By A Customer
I am the eleventh of twelve kids. I am 42, and come out of Brooklyn. I have walked the streets of Hoboken. It reminds me of Bay Ridge, but the Statue of Liberty is facing the other way, and the Twin Towers are so big and close. My father had a bar in Brooklyn: a place that catered to the lonely: longshoreman who didn't want to go home for whatever reasons, older women who were jilted by the latest bum. They drank, a concordat of losers. In silence, they smoked unfiltered cigarettes and listened to that guy on the jukebox. The guy who really felt their pain, decades before it became some rank political joke. The voice was Frank Sinatra's, and he was my hero since I could walk. Pete Hamill, whom I've been reading for over twenty-five years, has the lapidary's eye, the poet's words, in his brilliant analysis of Sinatra the man, and what his essence really meant. Speaking of Sinatra after his death, Hamill writes: "Now Sinatra is gone, taking with him all his anger, cruelty, generosity, and personal style. The music remains. In times to come, that music will continue to matter, whatever happens to our evolving popular culture. The world of my grand-children will not listen to Sinatra in the way four generations of Americans have listened to him. But high art always survives. Long after his death, Charlie Parker still plays his version of the urban blues, Billie Hoilday still whispers her anguish. Mozart still erupts in joy.....In their ultimate triumph over the banality of death, such artists continue to matter. So will Frank Sinatra." This slim volume is the best thing I've read about Sinatra. Hamill hides no blemishes, and still gives us a totality of the man that no other biographer could. Alas, most great singers and writers now repose on the other side of the grass. We no longer have Sinatra in the flesh, yet, through his music, he will outlive everyone. And in the year 2067, a young adult will listen to the unparalleled majesty of his voice for the first time, and then go to the library to read WHY SINATRA MATTERS by Pete Hamill to make some sense of it all. Good start
By Ailyn Koay
I was sceptical at first, mainly the cover did not seem to be attractive to me, and it seemed a little scary, with the hands holding the smaller one that way. But they did say not to judge a book by its cover, and I am glad that I didn’t.

Alawahea is a form of greeting for the Azellians, the alien race that is being hosted by Tamara Carrington’s school. Parents are accepting it, her grandmother seemed to hate that fact as much as she hates Tamara.

4 Azellians, discounting the ambassador arrives at her college as a start of an exchange student program. Tamara seemed drawn to them, and soon she was friends with the new students.

Ever since the arrival of the aliens, Tamara has been experiencing issues, aside from her family problems. I like Tamara a lot, she seems to have a good head on her shoulders, and the Azellians are a mystery to me. As the story goes on, it is clear that Tamara is not going to be a normal girl.

While the story is some what predictable, there are elements that I would love to follow on, like Tamara’s relationship with her father, her Earth friends versus the Azellians. I have to admit that it has always been a draw for me to read Alawahea, because this story is more about the relationships between individual rather than the story.

I would like to read the second book of the series if I get the chance, as this one has interesting developments that I would like to follow through. Definitely worth a read if you are into sci-fi friendships =)

Long wait well worth it!
By Terese Daigle
I thoroughly enjoyed the finally published version of Sara's book. As you can see, we have the same last name - we were friends first and then I married her cousin. So I may be a little biased in favor of the author. ;) But this book is much different from the version she was working on years ago when we got together every week to write, brainstorm, and watch movies. Sara put several twists in to the plot and I especially enjoyed the addition of a court case. Anyone looking for a good romance with some background drama will delight in this book as much as I have. I can't wait for the others in the series!

Wow! Fantasy intermingled with a palpable sense of possibility. While totally entertaining, this first book in the series introduces the reader to a new world full of new ideas about humans and other beings. The characters are established in a way they seem familiar but different, and yet their motives and feelings resonate. Looking forward to book two....what's gonna happen next?

Judging Science: Scientific Knowledge and the Federal Courts, by Kenneth R. Foster, Peter W. Huber

What is "scientific knowledge" and when is it reliable? These deceptively simple questions have been the source of endless controversy. In 1993, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling on the use of scientific evidence in federal courts. Federal judges may admit expert scientific evidence only if it merits the label "scientific knowledge." The testimony must be scientifically "reliable" and "valid."This book is organized around the criteria set out in the 1993 ruling. Following a general overview, the authors look at issues of fit--whether a plausible theory relates specific facts to the larger factual issues in contention; philosophical concepts such as the falsifiability of scientific claims; scientific error; reliability in science, particularly in fields such as epidemiology and toxicology; the meaning of "scientific validity"; peer review and the problem of boundary setting; and the risks of confusion and prejudice when presenting science to a jury. The book's conclusion attempts to reconcile the law's need for workable rules of evidence with the views of scientific validity and reliability that emerge from science and other disciplines.

Review

Anyone, scientist, jurist, or layman, will better judge the reliability of scientific results from reading the mosaic of quotations from experts, with annotations and expansions by the authors, that make up the core of this important book.

(Robert K. Adair, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Physics, Yale University)

This book will be very helpful for lawyers and judges, and for others who must evaluate scientific claims in the course of making policy decisions. It also would be a good resource book for courses in the philosophy of science, or in science and technology studies. Eminently readable an engaging, definitely original and well researched, it presents a view of science as the product of consensus and convergence that goes beyond anything in the current literature.

(Bert Black, Partner, Hughes & Luce, LLP)

One of the primary criticisms of the former Frye standard was that general acceptance was a crude, indirect gauge of scientific merit. In effect, the standard allowed judges and litigators to hide from science. Daubert now mandates that in assessing the admissibility of proffered scientific testimony, judges consider many of the same methods which scientists employ. In that light, this book will be highly useful to federal judges and litigators; they need to familiarize themselves with the very type of literature from which authors draw their experience. This book will make many of the leading scientific articles and texts far more accessible to federal judges and litigators.

(Edward J. Imwinkelried, Professor of Law, University of California, Davis)

This book will be a valuable resource for those who are interested in the intersection of science and the law. In this wide-ranging book, Foster and Huber have used the Supreme Court opinion in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals as a vehicle for a sophisticated discussion of what makes science good or bad and how the courts should assess whether an expert's testimony is admissible in court.

(Joseph Sanders, A.A. White Professor of Law, University of Houston Law Center)

Perhaps somewhat paradoxically, scientific evidence has become one of the most speculative and subjective components in American litigation. Foster and Huber's impressive book documents these numerous transgressions against scientific norms with a wealth of case studies. Judging Science will establish the frames of reference for the current debate over promoting scientific objectivity in the courtroom.

(W. Kip Viscusi, Cogan Professor of Law and Economics, Director on The Program on Empirical Legal Studies, Harvard Law School)

Judging Science is informative and scholarly, yet engagingly written, free of the jargon that often mars legal and scientific writings. The authors have an effective grasp of the ways of science and its use in the courts of law, and do explain it all with clarity and depth.

(Francisco J. Ayala, Donald Bren Professor of Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine)

This scholarly volume tackles what may be the toughest dilemma facing courts in the twenty-first century: How do judges and juries separate genuine, reliable scientific evidence from political and social commentary masquerading as science? The answer to this question affects almost every aspect of human existence, from the quality of our doctors and reliability of our drugs, to our ability to tell the guilty from the innocent. The book will serve as a beacon to judges and lawyers who must struggle to find their way in this wilderness.

(Alex Kozinski, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit)

Foster and Huber brilliantly illuminate the landscape of courtroom debates about the consequences and uncertainties of using science and technology in society. This tour de force is both a practical guide for citizens and journalists as well as a path-breaking clarification for judges and policy analysts.

(Rodney W. Nichols, President and Chief Executive Officer, New York Academy of Sciences)

Highlights the problems of much "scientific evidence"
By Tung Yin
Although non-lawyers can appreciate this book, it is really of use to lawyers in mass tort cases where scientific evidence is used to prove causality issues.
Foster and Huber use the litigation over the pregnancy drug Bendectin to explain the ways in which science is used and misused to "prove" cases. In the case of Bendectin, there was no conclusive medical evidence proving that the drug caused birth defects. Rather, there was a statistical association between the use of the drug and birth defects. Does this prove that Bendectin causes birth defects?
It might or it might not. The field of epidemiology attempts to answer the question by eliminating other possible explanations for the association. Various techniques of epidemiology include blind (or double-blind) testing, data analysis, and so on.
Foster and Huber demonstrate that the scientific techniques are not entirely conducive with the standards of modern litigation. For example, scientists generally do not speak of "proving" an assertion; rather, they "falsify" it. That is, they attempt to disprove it -- it is usually easier to show that something is not true, since you only need to find one example. When an assertion has withstood repeated attempts to falsify it, it becomes generally accepted.
This has important ramifications for litigation, however. Litigation -- particularly mass torts -- requires a "yes" or "no" answer: in the scientific opinion of the expert witness, does Bendectin cause birth defects? The expert will of course have explained his or her analysis, but in the end, that analysis must be boiled down into a yes or no answer, regardless of the suitability of such an intellectual liposuction.
In summary, this is a fascinating book if you are interested in these sorts of issues. Although the book covers science and scientific inquiry, it does not require a significant amount of scientific knowledge.

For Everyone Interested In Truth and Decisionmaking
By Review Guy
This is a very unique book and entirely appropriate for nonlawyers. This is not a "law book" on scientific evidence. The authors merely use Daubert -the case that announced the Supreme Court's current approach to scientific expert testimony- as the vehicle for an extended meditation on the nature of truth. There are very few case citations, and all jargon is thoroughly explained in advance.

Throughout the 20th Century, courts have been confounded by the question of how to regulate the use of science in the courtroom. Our system of law draws a distinction between "questions of fact" and "questions of law"; judges can generally only rule on latter. Questions of fact are up to the jury, and these are the questions to which scientific testimony is usually directed (e.g. "Did the defendant's pollutant cause the plaintiff's cancer?") But juries are generally no more scientifically literate than the populace at large, and the danger that they will be misled is great. Two questions arise: a) How can good science be distinguished from bad? and b) Who makes these quality judgments? The second question is a legal/policy question, but the first is just classic epistemology.

Before Daubert, courts took a hands-off approach, relying on the consensus of the scientific community - effectively on peer review. Daubert revolutionized the federal system by requiring the judge to make preliminary judgments of sound scientific method. But how?

This book examines the epistemological approach suggested by the dicta in Daubert, places that approach in intellectual/historical context, and then moves on to criticize it. All of this is done wonderfully, with lots of sidebars and examples. The authors sift the gems from a huge body of literature on law, epistemology and decision science. Brief, inexpensive, and lucid, this would make an excellent text for a college class in the philosophy of law, epistemology or jurisprudence. And don't be scared away by Peter Huber's polarizing reputation. This book's only political agendas are justice and accuracy.

Requires a bit of grappling with math, but well worth it
By Tung Yin
Since O.J. Simpson's double homicide trial acquainted everyonewith the concepts of RFLP and PCR testing for DNA, the issue ofscience in courtroom has been on the frontburner. As Foster and Huber demonstrate, however, this issue has had a long and controversial history.
Using the mass tort litigation involving the drug Bendectin, which was used to treat morning sickness but became suspected of causing birth defects, the authors make a key point: the scientific method is not entirely compatible with the legal method.
The scientific process consists of formulating a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis to see if it can be disproven, and repeating the testing process until one becomes convinced that the hypothesis must be true. (Or realizing that it is false, if a test disproves it.)
This means, however, that a scientific witness can be neutralized somewhat through clever (but artful) questioning of the sort, "Isn't it possible that . . . ."
There are no equations in this book, but there is some discussion of statistics, particularly as used in epidemiology. The mathematical concepts are not at all difficult, and well worth thinking about.
