In this latest effort to popularize the sciences, City University of New York professor and media star Kaku (Hyperspace) ponders topics that many people regard as impossible, ranging from psychokinesis and telepathy to time travel and teleportation. His Class I impossibilities include force fields, telepathy and antiuniverses, which don't violate the known laws of science and may become realities in the next century. Those in Class II await realization farther in the future and include faster-than-light travel and discovery of parallel universes. Kaku discusses only perpetual motion machines and precognition in Class III, things that aren't possible according to our current understanding of science. He explains how what many consider to be flights of fancy are being made tangible by recent scientific discoveries ranging from rudimentary advances in teleportation to the creation of small quantities of antimatter and transmissions faster than the speed of light. If only Jules Verne could read this book.

Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, force Fields, Teleportation, and time Travel is just the right book at the right time. In fact, Michio Kaku's sytle reminds me just a bit like Carl Sagan in that he tries to make scientifically difficult topic easy to understand. Kaku's mission here is to spread knowledge and that he does very well.

There are other books similar to Physics of the Impossible. Some have been mentioned by other reviewers. I'd like to mention The Science of Star Wars by Jeanne Cavelus and The Physics of Star Trek by Lawrence M. Krauss and Stephen Hawking. Like Physics of the Impossible, both of these works attempt to apply hard scientific facts-of-life to popular ideas in modern fiction. What Kaku does is to organize his ideas into classes of impossibility and here lies an important element of this book.

Michio Kaku is a born communicator which is why he is so often seen on television and why his books are so popular. He is at his best, in my opinion, in Physics of the Impossible. Well written by an author that knows his material and wants to communicate his ideas, the book is sure to please and inform and stimulate the imagination.

I highly recommend Physics of the Impossible.

A fun, mind-bending journey!

This is probably Dr. Kaku's best popular work since Hyperspace or Visions. Here is a wide range of scientific possibilities to be explored. Dr. Kaku's gift is to make modern physics comprehensible to those of us without a mathematical background. In this book he uses his gift to explain how the standard model and string field theory (which he is coauthor of) can be applied to contemplation of some of our most wildest scifi dreams. The chapters are short and easily read in short sittings, which lends well to a book that stretches the imagination so dramaticaly. Dr. Kaku is also careful to remain objective in discussing different theoretical approaches which is an admirable feat given some of the topics ventured into in this book. If you enjoy cutting edge science, it doesn't get more cutting edge then this. Thank you Dr. Kaku for yet another wonderful journey.

Making Science accessible to the masses

I've been a big fan of Dr. Kaku since I first saw him on The Science Channel years ago, but this is the first book of his I've read.

In "The Physics of the Impossible," Michio Kaku explores the very subjects that fuels the imagination of those who love science fiction because of the possibilities it raises. Is Time Travel possible? What about Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Light Sabers? Could one really build a Death Star?

One of the great things about Dr. Kaku's approach is that he does not talk down to the lay person, but he writes just as he speaks, with a simple eloquence that makes these complex concepts accessible to the non-Physicist mind. And it is always clear just how much passion Dr. Kaku has for his work, and he easily passes that on to his audience through his words.

Another great thing about this book is that it's not only an education on the concepts of such things as String Theory and so much more, it's also an exploration of the history behind moderm Physics, dating back to the days of Isaac Newton and beyond. I learned so much about the triumphs, and even more surprising, the tragedies befalling many of the pioneers of modern science merely because they were people with concepts far ahead of their times.

I have to say that if you are a young physicist in the making, an older person who is simply fascinated in the subject of Science, a Science Fiction writer looking for deeper understanding of these subjects to inspire you in your writing, or just someone wanting to get better insight into the mysteries behind the nature of the universe, then this is definitely the book for you.

Not bad, but the black and white photos are not too great. I'm not finding myself reaching for this as a reference very much. Its inexpensive though, so that's good.

it is mired in bad, or no editing

I recently bought this book, and while helpful I couldn't help but feel as if I was being talked to as a three year old. Of course I am going to get out of it what I want, however I wish the author would have spent an extra day proof-reading before printing. For what little assistance there is; it is mired in bad, or no editing, and I am speaking of things that change meaning... For example

"The reason for this is because when you throw your body right into static stretching before your muscles have had a chance to catch up and get pliable, you actually reduce the effectiveness of more dynamic movements and REDUCE the risk of injury".

I'm quite certain she meant increase the risk of injury which entirely changes the meaning. This is one of many, and while some may say you're being over harsh on your analysis, I feel that if I'm spending money to buy a book from you that you can have the respect for your audience to edit it. It's very distracting to read something you're trying to learn when it's poorly written.

Keith Carter holds the endowed Walles Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and is the recipient of a 2009 Texas Medal of Arts Award and the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He is the author of eleven previous books, including Fireflies, A Certain Alchemy, Holding Venus, Keith Carter Photographs: Twenty-Five Years, Heaven of Animals, Mojo, The Blue Man, and From Uncertain to Blue. Carter’s work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the J. Good Work Poorly Printed

There's is plenty of good work in the book and the introductions by Carter and Horton Foote are both interesting reads. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst printed books I've seen in a long, long time. I'm uncertain if it's just a few isolated copies or if the entire run is like this, but it pretty much ruins the viewing experience.

Good Idea, Superb Results

Uncertain and Blue are the names of just two of the one hundred small Texas towns having quaint and unusual names which Keith and Pat Carter visited in the late 1980's. This curious photo expedition produced the 80 works depicted in this fine book. The photographs are straightforward B&W images of people, places and animals which are poignant and evocative.

The book's introduction was written by Carter's friend and admirer, the late Oscar-winning screenwriter and playwright Horton Foote (The Trip to Bountiful, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Tender Mercies.)

Carter has published many wonderful photography monographs. I have them all, and still look forward to more.

Classic Americana (or Texana) photographs of small-town life

In 1986, Keith Carter suggested to his wife Pat that they commemorate their tenth wedding anniversary by driving all around Texas, leaving the interstates, "and messing around the back roads and taking pictures." They got out their maps, and for the next summer and over weekends of the following year they visited scads of Texas towns whose names intrigued them, with Pat taking notes and Keith taking pictures of whatever interested them. For this book of photographs shot during their travels, Keith selected, for each of eighty towns, one photograph that for him personified that town. The result is a classic of Americana (or, if you prefer, Texana).

The photographs are all square-format (about 9 x 9 inches). They are sepia-tinged black-and-white. Keith Carter has a marvelous eye. And both he and Pat must have a wonderful way with people to elicit the humanity that is revealed in the twenty-five or so photographs that have people in them.

Among the pictures: chickens strutting under a clothes-line on which a sheet is billowing in the wind; two ancient gas pumps in the middle of weeds in front of an apparently abandoned building in the middle of nowhere; a lushly blooming white morning glory vine completely covering the window of a little frame house; a thin, speckled hunting dog in the foreground, staring at the camera from the middle of a dirt road that stretches back into Kudzu-draped trees; straw bales stacked up in the middle of a field with a bullet-pocked deer target attached to the side of the pile; two sixty-somethings propped against the tailgate of their pick-up truck loaded with melons they have driven fifty miles to sell at this particular country crossroad; about twenty people -- young and old, black and white, men and women -- whitewashing a wooden clapboard church; and a small cemetery with about a dozen tombstones, all inclined in different directions at different angles.

And the names of those Texas towns! Birthright, Bleakwood, Blessing (where I once had a tremendous buffet lunch in a wooden hotel built in 1907), Cut 'N Shoot, Diddy Waw Diddy, Dime Box, Elysian Fields, Frognot, Grit, Old Glory, Pointblank, Sweet Home, Tuxedo, Welcome. And, of course, Uncertain and Blue. (For a few of the "towns", even in 1986 only the name remained. One wonders how many other of these towns have disappeared over the past three decades.)

Enhancing the photographs is a splendid introduction by Horton Foote and equally splendid notes from Pat Carter. The notes are printed at the back of the volume so as not to interfere with viewing the photographs themselves (which are printed one per two-page spread). For about half of the photographs, the only information provided is the name of the town and the county in which it is located. For the other half, Pat Carter adds notes (some stretching to three or four paragraphs) about the town itself or her and Keith's visit there. For example, here is what she writes about Noonday: "The school is defunct and now serves as a community center. Just across the road the Baptist and Methodist churches sit side by side, and it appears that every living soul in Noonday is inside one or the other on this Sunday morning at 10:45 a.m. Keeping score by number of cars it's Baptists 12; Methodists, 8."

FROM UNCERTAIN TO BLUE was the first book of photographs that Keith Carter published (around ten more have followed). It has become a semi-landmark book of photographs. What I have is the original 1988 edition. This second edition was issued by Texas Monthly Press in 2011. From the description provided by Amazon, it appears that both Keith and Pat have contributed additional text to this second edition. People who treasure either small town America or fine photography (or both) should not miss it.

About the Author

Bonnie MacBird was born and raised in San Francisco and fell in love with Sherlock Holmes by reading the canon at age ten. She attended Stanford University, earning a BA in Music and an MA in Film. Her long Hollywood career includes feature film development exec at Universal, the original screenplay for the movie TRON, three Emmy Awards for documentary writing and producing, numerous produced plays and musicals, and theatre credits as an actor and director. In addition to her work in entertainment, Bonnie teaches a popular screenwriting class at UCLA Extension, as well as being an accomplished water-colourist. She is a regular speaker on writing, creativity, and Sherlock Holmes. She lives in Los Angeles, with frequent trips to London.

A Flimsily Plotted, Poorly Characterized Effort

For several months, I had 'Art In The Blood' on pre-order, which is something I almost never do, and was greatly looking forward to a book that gave every appearance of being a traditionally penned Sherlock Holmes story. Alas, it disappoints me to admit not only was this nothing of the sort, it has also gone a fair way in causing me to reconsider the wisdom in continuing to read pastiches by modern writers. It has been apparent for a while now that certain television and movie characterizations have leaked into published Holmes novels, yet here, the author maintains a pathetic knowledge of Canon and, as she admits herself, makes no attempt whatsoever in imitating the characterization or writing style (the latter, I admit, is far less of an issue) of Doyle's creations.

Therefore, before the story itself began to fall apart, my main gripe was that these men referred to as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were anything but; though her Watson is not so lamentable, and even fairly good at times, Holmes was entirely unrecognizable to this stodgy old Canon purist. On that note, however, it must be said that the greatest flaw of this book was not actually the intentionally skewered characterizations, but what passed for its plot.

After Watson is married and his wife is away visiting her mother (apparently, Mary Morstan is not an orphan in this author's world), he is summoned to Baker Street, where Holmes is languishing in a black mood after a stint in prison. Nothing the doctor can do rouses him, until an interesting missive requesting his assistance in the possible kidnapping of the woman's young boy comes along. Holmes then journeys to Paris, where it appears, aside from some utter twaddle regarding the man becoming besotted with a client, there lies a nice, juicy mystery ahead.

Except, this is where the plot begins to unravel and the nonsense begins. Along with this investigation of the disappeared child, Mycroft has enlisted Holmes to look into the whereabouts of a stolen statue which it turns out connects to the kidnapping case. Instead of the two plots intersecting gradually, after interviewing the Parisian woman, Holmes and Watson magically end up at a nightclub where the most utterly ridiculous and extraneous "action" scene transpires. There, he meets Vidocq (can we say derivative?), who has also been enlisted by the child's mother/his paramour. Of course, being the glorified fanfiction this is, we get to see a jealous!Holmes whose emotions cloud his judgement.

Not, in all honesty, that it would matter, because this kidnapping "investigation" goes absolutely nowhere, not even in a circle as it chases its own tail, and after a second, pointless interview with the child's mother, Holmes arrives in London and gets the solution to the case handed to him on a silver platter by Mycroft. You read this correctly. At around page 110, Mycroft basically just tells him where the boy is, and as a favor for this piece of information, has his brother go undercover at the house of the boy's adopted parents, who, we just magically are told out of thin air, is the art thief who stole the statue. To be fair, Holmes does find this out himself whilst disguised at the docks, but there is not even a sentence of explanation as to how he made the connection betwixt the shipping yards and the thief. Loose threads such as this littered the story, and really made it impossible to continue holding my attention when we know everything from motive to perpetrator 1/3 of the way through the story.

In short, though I am loath to leave books unfinished, it took me five or six days just to slog through to somewhere over page 230, where I finally had to admit defeat. An airy, insubstantial, incredibly dumbed down version of Doyle's creation, the Holmes we were presented with here was but a pale intimation of that great intellect, the "introspective and pallid dreamer of Baker Street", and replaced with an action figure more suited for modern audiences who prefer to check their little grey cells at the front door in regards to their reading material. Quite frankly, this was BBC fanfiction with a thinly veiled Sherlock & John in something vaguely resembling the Victorian era, and although saying as much will no doubt get me burned in effigy, it is indeed a sad day if this is what the future of pastiche is destined to become.

In conclusion, this is not a recommended read for Holmesians, those of that dying breed who prefer the intellectualism of the originals over sensationalism. I also noticed this book was not endorsed by the ACD estate, and whilst that has never been a factor which weighed at all with me, if this is what does /not/ get approved or vetted by the estate, then I might just have to reconsider that stance.

The game is afoot, again!

One of the best Holmesian pastiches around! (and I've read a lot). Holmes and Watson are back in this delightful adventure which takes us from the cabarets and artist studios of Gay Paree to a country estate in Lancashire, mixing real and fictitious places and characters in a thoroughly credible way. The relationship between Holmes and Watson is particularly carefully rendered and feels authentic ; at times, the dialogues and attitudes between the two clearly call to mind some of the pairs of famous actors who best portrayed the duo. Other cast members are equally well portrayed, such as the beautiful and feisty singer Mlle La Victoire, and Holmes's cocky but endearing rival Vidocq. Plenty of twists and turns, plots and sub-plots, and convincing villains make this a fast-paced page-turner, while also efficiently conveying the nostalgic, pleasant feel of the adventures of the well-loved duo, complete with scenes in Baker street and rattling along London streets and the English countryside in cabs and trains. An exceedingly enjoyable read, can't wait for the sequel!

Decent but nothing to write home about. While I found myself excited at first, because it was reminiscent of actual Sherlock Holmes adventures, I also ended up losing touch fairly easily, and not being really interested in what was happening. Perhaps because of the hints at a potential attraction toward the French artist (I don't know... for me, Irene Adler still remains the only woman for Sherlock). Or because the mystery itself seemed to drag, and to lack the usual “punch” I expect in a Holmes & Watson adventure.

I thought Sherlock overlooked quite a few things, and made a few too many mistakes here, mistakes that didn't ring “true” to his character. Granted, I haven't read any of the original stories in a few years; however, I don't remember him as endangering himself so because he miscalculated an enemy's move, for instance. He felt and acted as less acute than his usual self here, and all in all, he wasn't the Holmes I'm used to: making him more approachable didn't work here, and seeing his judgment sometimes impaired by tepid emotions was... strange. He was too remote from Doyle's Sherlock, yet didn't bring anything original or particularly interesting to the character.

(On the other hand, Watson wasn't introduced, nor acted, as the bumbling idiot he too often is in too many stories, which is always good in my opinion!)

The mystery itself was so-so. Not particularly interesting, a bit all over the place (France, London, art, potential love interests, kids disappearing, shifty French detective, Vidocq, a suspicious gaoler, silk trade...), beating around the bush, Mycroft's way of getting involved and making things easier for the characters—resulting in not much investigating on their part where there should've been... I suppose the themes it raised, like children treated as slaves or worse, should've been treated more seriously, only some of this was just thrown in, especially at the end, and its impact thus lowered.

The writing itself: not terrific either. Not emulating a “Victorian” style of writing, not close to Doyle's, too modern in parts... It didn't do much for me. Same with the “art” part, and the way it could've ran parallel with investigation methods: it didn't deliver.

I can't say I hated it, but I just didn't care.
