This book is different, however, because it questions not so much the motivations of heritage professionals but the nature of the engagement itself, the extent to which this is collaborative or contested and the implications this has for the communities concerned. Furthermore, in exploring these issues in a variety of contexts around the world, it recognises that heritage provides a source of engagement within communities that is separate from professional discourse and can thus enable them to find voices of their own in the political processes that concern them and affect their development, identity and well-being.

About the Author

Emma Waterton is Senior Lecturer in Heritage and� Tourism. She holds an RCUK Fellowship in History and Heritage at Keele University. Her interests include�unpacking the discursive constructions of ‘heritage’; community involvement in the management of heritage; the divisions implied between tangible and intangible heritage; and the role played by visual media. Publications include the co-authored volume (with Laurajane Smith) Heritage, Communities and Archaeology (Duckworth 2009) and the co-edited volume (with Steve Watson) Culture, Heritage and Representations (Ashgate 2010).

Steve Watson is a Principal Lecturer at York St John University, where he teaches tourism and heritage-related subjects. His interests are in the areas of cultural and heritage tourism and the social, cultural and representational processes by which places are transformed into tourist destinations. He is also concerned with the relationships between heritage and host communities and the nature of the interface between professional practice and community involvement in the formulation and construction of heritage. He has co-edited (with Emma Waterton) Culture, Heritage and Representations (Ashgate 2010).

Very good, thorough reference. Makes a great textbook or reference for research. Arrived in good condition and when expected.

I purchased this book as the required text for an undergraduate level Medieval Literature class. So the first thing you should know about it before buying it is that this book contains the least amount of translation from the original text to modern english when possible. So this is probably not a book you should buy for fun unless you're a linguist or an English Medieval Literature enthusiast, it's entirely meant as a reference.
Now, that probably sounded pretty negative, but I do mean in to be positive since being a good reference is the entire purpose of it. It gets as close to the original text as possible and sometimes it IS in the original language. It makes a great reference, but I will there are some things to point out in case it matters to someone buying this, and I will give an outline of what it contains.
It starts out with a very brief history of the Middle Ages and short overview of the sounds, pronunciation, and grammar of middle english, before it begins you at one of the oldest known Old English Poem's, Caedmon's Hymn, for which it gives the Old English verse for verse with translation. And then a translation of Dream of the Rood with annotation. Unfortunately the Old English is not provided for the Dream of the Rood in this book (they could have added it, the poem's only a couple of pages), so if you want a side by side translation, you would have to search elsewhere. And then it has a few more Anglo-saxon pieces, including Beowulf of course, translated and annotated. These also do not provide the Old English, but more understandably so, because if they had, the book would be twice as thick and probably not necessary for it's intended use.
Then just a little Irish Literature and Anglo Norman Literature before the Romance genre which includes Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. (there's very little else involving King Arthur) Then it goes right into Geoffrey Chaucer's the Cantebury Tales which is in the actual Middle English with translation on the side for some words each page and also with heavy annotation. They include the General Prologue, as well as The Miller's Prologue and Tale, The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale, The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale, and The Parsons tale. We didn't go much farther than that in the class I was using it for, and I haven't really checked it out the rest for myself, but there's some more from the 14th and 15th century, some lyrics, mystery plays, and courtly romance poems/ lyrics.
Also the book came as described, which was in good condition with little to no writing or highlighting. (there was only one page with minimal pencil markings and writing)
I know this was a very long review, but I try to be thorough, so I hope it really helps someone. I was completely satisfied with this item.

9th Edition

(Please note: this is a review of the edition, not of English Literature - or the seller of my copy.)

There are some advantages to this 9th ed over the 8th. The Anglo-Saxon selection is greatly improved: the translations now are all in verse, and give much more sense of the originals as poetry. Some changes are an ambiguous blessing: we now get the whole of Utopia, which sounds like a good idea, but is more than most teachers will want to include in a survey class (so now we have to do our own selections instead). Other changes are a big mistake, like the new text of Margery Kempe - haphazardly semi-modernized, and really unusable.

The best thing, apart from the Anglo-Saxon selection, is the new font, which is bigger and clearer than that of the 8th ed. For choice of texts, I'm inclined to prefer the 6th ed., which included more from the Canterbury Tales (the beautiful Franklin's Tale), and the 7th ed., which included some strange and wonderful Ranter writing - very briefly fashionable in academia.

These are solid collections of great literature with informative introductions

I had to buy these books for my British Literature course, but still value them outside of the program. These are solid collections of great literature with informative introductions. The interior layout is also intuitive and visually satisfying. I ended up getting the set that breaks the different time periods into different books, which was way better than just having the one giant volume. Needless to say, everyone in my class was a bit jealous that I didn't have to carry around a brick.

Keri Hulme, a Maori, grew up in Christchurch and Moeraki, New Zealand. She writes, paints, and whitebaits in Okarito, Westland. Three broken souls come together to tell an amazing story.

This book left an indelible imprint on my heart and soul. Let me say up front that, while this is one of the most creative, unique and wonderful stories I've ever read, I would not recommend it to everyone. Here's why:

1. Not only is the theme of child abuse and neglect woven throughout the story, but there are a few episodes of abuse that are described in quite intense detail. These episodes can be horrific and will likely be too much for some people, especially those who are parents of small children.

2. The writing format/style of this book is unlike anything I've ever seen. While I found it wildly unique and therefore loved it from a creative standpoint, it made the story difficult to get into and stay connected with at times.

3. The entire book is about three people--all of which can be quite unlikeable at times. I usually find it difficult to stay with a book when I don't like the characters but, though these three people all annoyed me at times, I came to love some piece of all of them (some more than others).

4. The author weaves native Maori words and phrases into the text. This isn't a bad thing, unless you are annoyed by frequently having to stop and go to the back of the book to look up words so you'll understand the context of how they're used. It took me forever to figure out that the "dictionary" was even there, so I was completely lost for the first third or so of the book and was highly annoyed that these Maori words were being used and not defined. D'oh!

All that said, this is an AMAZING journey of three broken souls who form an unusual friendship and, along the way, manage to find their way to healing. I'm at the age where not a lot of books stay with me for very long. But I read this book maybe 4-6 months ago and the feeling it left me with is nearly as fresh today as it was then. Take a leap of faith. Read this book. I'm betting that it will touch you deeply.

No Man is an Island

The Bone People is as perfect as a book can be. Although the author's stream-of-consciousnenss style may take a little getting used to for readers of more conventional books, it is as smooth as silk and never jarring. Hulme's manipulation of the third person subjective is masterful and we really come to know each of the three protagonists and feel their deep and continuous pain. Although the subject matter portrayed in The Bone People is dark and often horrendous, the writing itself is lyrical, a testament to Hulme's power as a poet. But make no mistake, The Bone People is a narrative, a superb one, and not a prose poem.
For me, The Bone People is a meditation about the destructive effects of closing oneself to others, of retreating and withdrawing so far into oneself that one is no longer capable of real communication and communion with others.
Each of the three protagonists, because of excessive pain, pain that goes beyond any words, has built and retreated into what he or she hopes will be a protective shell but finds instead a nightmare world, one that leads each to the very brink of death.
I have heard some people say they believe the ending to be trite or "tacked on." I found the ending absolutely perfect, and given each character's "trial by fire," I don't know how Hulme could have written the ending any differently and still maintained the integrity of her book.
I am sure there are many Maori legends, myths and references in The Bone People that I missed as I know little about this fascinating culture. But do not let a lack of Maori knowledge stop you from reading this superb book. It is, above all else, a wonderfully insightful character study that is rich, complex and filled with love and pain beyond measure.
I enjoy reading almost any book I choose to delve into, but few have left me with a feeling of awe. The Bone People is one that did. I am sure I will remember it for a long, long time to come. Indeed, I may never forget it. In short, I simply cannot praise it highly enough.

A lot of potential....

I gave this book three stars because I would give the first two-thirds five stars and the last third one star. Since I'm not sure how all this totals up (math being my worst subject), I'm just going to rate it at three, which seems fair enough.
The writing is fascinating, first of all: pure stream-of-consciousness with some added leaps of imagination. At first I wasn't sure about it, but following Hulme's advice in her introduction I persisted, and it was indeed like kina roe--it grew on me. Sometimes it is surreal, dreamlike; at other times earthy, even brutal. This jarring contrast is one of the qualities that makes the rhythm and flow of the writing so distinctive.
Then there are the characters: Kerewin, Joe, and Simon a.k.a. Clare a.k.a. Haimona are some of the most memorable I've ever read about. The ropes of twisted and tormented emotions which eventually bind them are conveyed with an insight into love as a thing which is multi-dimensional past reasoning. Their inner voices and heart's desires are portrayed with poignant subtlety, running together with the silent music of Hulme's prose.
The book is disturbing in its way, and often cruel, while at other times gently lyrical. Yet the two do not contradict: Hulme is portraying life's ugliest possibilities along with the most beautiful and uplifting. Together with the style of writing, this odd juxtaposition somehow works, and works well.
So what was my problem? To me, at least, the last third of the book had no connection to the rest. At a certain point events are suddenly rushed in a manner which is too contrived to be believable; it then goes a step further by suddenly introducing the reader to Maori mysticism and placing it as the central element of the work. Now, I don't mind Maori mysticism as long as the author doesn't introduce it all of a sudden at the end as a plot device. That this was all somehow a plot of the divine powers-that-be did no justice to the very human characters and emotions which had hitherto been the driving force of the story. The kamatua, his stories and his dreams seemed like the author was taking a very unrealistic easy way out rather than introducing more depth. The kamatua himself is no more than a plot device, rather than a full-fleshed character; his death meant less than nothing to me, and the discovery of the idol even less than that. It's as if all the vital threads which held the story together were suddenly snapped, to be replaced by a foreign element which had nothing to do with matters at hand. The three characters I had come to care about so much were left hanging--and ultimately, they petered out.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an original, thoughtful read--with the stipulation that the ending is disappointing. The book should be read for the experience, regardless of its destination.

Excellent illustrations; a good reference book for the equine enthusiast

This book has great illustrations page by page and covers a myraid of equine medical subjects from OCD to suspensory ligaments to foaling out. Although it is not extremely in depth I think this is a "must have" for every horse owner as it covers the topics you will come into contact with as a horse owner and talks about possible treatments at time of publishing. For a veterinary text for owners or vet students, I think this is a very good one. I own both Volumes 1 and 2 and utilize them quite a few times every year.

A Walk Through Nature

This is one of four books in which naturalist Teale and his wife Nellie travel across the United States during one of the seasons and observe wildlife and ecosystems. While most fall volumes concentrate on leaf coloration and homely pursuits that include pumpkins, winter vegetables, and animals preparing for hibernation, the Teales' track starts in New England and then takes a meandering way westward through Michigan, the upper Plains states, dip down to the Great Salt Lake, go north to Oregon and end up in Northern California, both at the shore and inland, all done in the days before the interstate. They discover unique bird species, find the places where the butterflies stop over on their migrations, tour the redwood forests, view the autumn sky from a homemade sky-watching station, investigate the roamer of the plains (the tumbleweed), see migrating salmon, discover pikas and fern farmers, and even tell the story of a man's arduous multi-month search for his beloved dog lost in the wilderness. These books are a must for anyone who enjoys reading about wildlife and natural habitats, and there are great views of road travel before the superhighways. Like a virtual nature hike. Enjoy!

WONDERFUL OBSERVATIONS AND PROSE HERE

This work was first published in 1956 and as far as I can tell it is out of print at this time and what a pity that is. This is nature and travel writing at it's very best. This is a part of a four part series on America, nature and the land. The author goes into out of the way places and in his wonderful prose discribes nature and it's seasons. This volume, number three, addresses autumn. This is a part of the 20,000 thousand mile journey, from coast to coast. The author follows the season from the east coast to the west coast, making observations and sharing his thoughts. This is truely nature writing at it's best and I highly recommend this one.

Another Wonderful Book by Naturalist Edwin Way Teale

This book, like all of this naturalist's other books, is a gift to those of us who grew up thinking about things his way but never encountered another soul who might have made mention of their thoughts this way. As adults, and as we take on more and more responsibilities as we add on the years....we begin to freely think of what we value....more and more. We stop worrying about whether it is an acceptable thought to those we know and start being more open about how we may have always thought and about many things in nature, especially.

So I am writing this review with that in mind. Since it applies to all of Edwin Way Teale's philosophies and observations, I would say to anyone interested....that he was a most remarkable man and one we would have been honored to get to know. A real winner for those of us who have managed to do our own thinking!
