Comprehensive botany textbook, but ecology chapters are online only

I have a complimentary teacher copy of this book, but I'm pretty sure it is the same edition. The authors are Evert and Eichhorn, with a dedication to Peter Raven, who has been a co-author on this book series since its inception. We are teaching Introduction to Botany from this textbook to our biology undergrads and despite discussions every now and then about switching textbooks we keep coming back to it as the best book suited for the class. It is by many considered the "plant biology bible" of sorts and provides a wide overview of botany. We have just adopted the 8th edition for the class starting next semester, but I have only taught from the 7th edition so far.
The book overall is clearly written and nicely illustrated. It gives an overview of a wide range of topics and consequently contains a lot of information especially for someone new to the field but doesn't go into a whole lot of detail on each one (at least from a teacher perspective). E.g. the discussion of chloroplasts (arguably the most important organelle in plant cells) fills a page and a half. The sheer amount of material is too much to teach in a one semester introductory course at sophomore level, and I usually end up covering about half or a little more of the content. The vast amount of info and wide range of topics makes it a great reference book and students who are thinking of making a career in a plant-oriented field may want to hold onto it for future use while taking upper level courses.
The book is organized into seven sections:
1) Biology of the plant cell
2) Energetics
3) Genetics and evolution
4) Diversity
5) The angiosperm plant body: Structure and development
6) Physiology of seed plants
7) Ecology (this section is not part of the book, but available online as PDFs)
The 8th edition was long overdue since the 7th edition we have been using in class was getting noticeably outdated. In this new edition, every topic has been updated with recent research. According to the authors, it has undergone the most significant revision in the history of this book.
The most noticeable updates are in the Diversity and Physiology sections of the book, where recent molecular systematics data and e.g. research into plant hormone receptors have added a lot more information to our current knowledge about plant evolution and how plants function on a cellular and molecular level. Other significant updates include an expansion of the discussion of light reactions in the chapter on photosynthesis, epigenetic mechanisms in the chapter on gene expression, the development of "golden rice" via recombinant DNA technology, a reorganization of fungi and protists according to the latest classifications, an expansion of the discussion of angiosperm ancestors and new cladograms, new discussions of leaf vein development and the ABCDE model of flower development, addition of brassinosteroids as a major class of plant hormones, and extensive revision of the chapter on external factors now including genetic control of vernalization and more.
A number of essays showcasing current "hot topics" in plant biology, such as biofuels, have been added. The ecology content has been strengthened by including essays and chapter openings that showcase ecologically relevant topics. However, the actual chapters of the Ecology section are only available online, as they were in the 7th edition, which is rather disappointing. This makes it a less comprehensive textbook than it could be since in my experience most students never bother printing out the extra chapters, and is my main reason for not giving it a five star rating.

Great infomation but missing chapters and WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!

Raven, by all accounts from many sources, is THE base setting textbook for botany. However this latest edition, which passes the $250.00 mark at the school books store, and still $140.00 here on Amazon, was published without the latest updates that prompted the new edition! Chapters 31 and 32 must be sought out, as PDF files, either from your professor, or the publisher itself. Why require the latest edition of a textbook when that edition does not include the latest updates at publication? Just another show of how publishers of textbooks rip off students and professors alike!
