As a theocracy, the political and spiritual in Tibet are intertwined, and this biography reflects that fact by concentrating on both the political history of the country and on the spiritual life of the subject. The author's sympathies are clearly with the Dalai Lama and his decisions. Chinese justifications for annexing Tibet are presented, but easily explained away. The Dalai Lama's accomplishments in maintaining and promoting Tibetan culture in exiled Tibetan communities around the world are praised. The text is illustrated with well-chosen black-and-white and full-color photographs from various archives. A useful addition for reports.?Susan Middleton, LaJolla Country Day School, CA

A great biography about the Dali Lhama and Tibet. It is easy to read and very instresting. A good amount of vocabulary for 7-10 year olds. Whitney Stewart makes it much easier to understand about the Dali Lhama and what is happening in Tibet. END

Fascinating interview-based biography

I've read several of Whitney Stewart's bios, and come to realize she is a highly conscientious biographer who bases her bios on iterviews with her subjects. Few biographers for children bother with interviews; most glean highlights about theis subjects' lives from secondary materials.
In contrst, Stewart interviews her subjects. She interviewed the dalai lama for this book and it shows in the quality and quantity of details she presents. For example, she mentions a heartbreaking childhood memory of the dalai lama's: When he was a child, a poor couple passed their house with a dead child. The Dalai Lama's mother offered to help them bury the child, but they were so desperately hungry that--well, you can guess what they were intending, in their desperation. Instead, the dalai lama's family fed and helped them.
That's the kind of detail a biographer doesn't come up with easily--not unless they have their subject before them, telling them their first hand story.
I am an adult reader, and feel the book, like all her bios, are appropriate for both kids and adults. Bravo!

Robust, wild and thought-provoking

The Divine Drawing - first book in a planned trilogy in the Broken Wings series

Twenty-seven year old Daniel 'Surefire' Lasky - August 1945: He had a tough life, apart from feeling guilty for knowing that his mom died giving birth to him. He always felt unworthy and condemned to carry his mother's maiden name as his middle name through life.

"His professional billing became a passing salute, his own signature a never-ending rebuke. He'd inherited her family's fine-haired Luce features and once he began filling out with the husky Lasky stature, his father had measured him in fascinated disgust. 'Don't be too proud of your size, boy: that's the bulk killed your blessed mother.' Old Jarred's guilt-provoking chides never failed to erase whatever arrogance had since settled in Surefire's eyes, removing all cockiness from his crippled swagger and peace from his wounded heart."

He needed to get away from the marriage-hungry nineteen-year old Miss Mitty, a tourist guide at the Grand Canyon, and Benjamin ' Burning Sky' Smith - also called Benjy or Sky- his longtime friend.

"As the crippled youngest of ten children, proving his manhood in a society which tended to mollycoddle the disabled, had been a constant struggle. Rejected by the army at the age of nineteen, he'd gone off to find toughness that would take him on. Pitting himself against ferocious felines in Africa was not be the same as walking unaided, but it sure gave him a great edge. And back home he'd force himself to excel at whatever he set his mind to. In the air, on horseback and in water, his lameness was less inhibiting, and he could manoeuvre a plane like some dog-fighting German ace, ride a horse like the old-time redskin warriors, and, with his fine upper-body physique, swim strongly. His Indian tracking, skilled markmanship and death-defying exploits made him a champion trick-shooter and America's most acclaimed rodeo stuntman."

He had a rootless life, following rodeos around the country in a horse-trailing truck, showing off his roping, telling hunting anecdotes, sing cowboy songs, do horse-riding stunts, show off his rifle, tomahawk and knife skills. He lived his young adult days refining his skills in gambling, girls, smoking loco-weed and cheap liquor, while acquiring his pilot license with the money he saved up. The hair-dangling eagle feather was his proudest possession. And a lion-claw necklace would be another trademark. An African-shaped birthmark had a place on his face. His horse is named Buckwheat and his swag-bag, a stuffed sock, full of money concludes his worldly possessions. He is also known as 'Manshadow'. He associated easier with the Indian culture becoming more Indian than the Indians themselves. He would therefor be regarded as the 'Indian-aping atheist' at the mission.

He received a letter from Doctor Jonas Burns Cadence of the Episcopal Church, offering him a proposition in Africa where Luce Lasky previously spent two years. They were to set off for Mamelodi (Holy Water) mission in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) on the continent,known as 'The White Man's Grave'. Luce Lasky was asked to find the grave of Dr. Cadence's long lost twin brother, Josiah. He promised the censorius Dr. Cadence that he is compromised in certain activities, such as roller-skating and dancing the jitterbug, but he has the aptitude 'to think as clear, shoot as straight, and lay as many wimmen'as the rest of 'em!'

" Gold might be the god of some men, precious gems the treasure others hankered for, but for Daniel 'Surefire' Lasky, hunting African lions constituted the very elixir of life."

He already killed 49 and could not wait to deliver no. 50 to the taxidermist.

At twenty seven years of age, and coming from bad, sometimes cruel, experiences as a foster child in Christian care, he was disrespectful towards the Christian lifestyle of his African missionary family. His one-sided distaste and aversion of Christianity is evident in his scathing thoughts:

"Settling down, he started reading 'Worldwide Missionary Victories for God through the Ages'. Surefire was soon riveted by the cold cruelties and dishonourable dealings shamelessly confessed. It seemed that, after bludgeoning much of the world into compliance with its infamous medieval crusades, 'civilized' Christians had begun looking around for fresh fields to conquer. By this time, although no longer overly using swords or witch-burning to convert non-believers, their strategy was ultimately no less coercive and devastating."

He rejected all forms of authority (which might be in stark contrast to real Indian teachings). He walked shirtless in Indian garb all over the mission station and beyond, probably to make a statement and uphold an image. Overcoming serious illness and injury by sheer strength of mind, justified his confidence in his own abilities. Absolutely nothing would keep him down, not while his will and wit were pitted against it. He was determined to solve the mystery of 'The Mountains of Tomorrow' which everybody, locals as well as missionaries and pilots, refused to investigate. He believed he could do it.

My opinion: A really relaxing, tension-builder which never falters throughout the book. Although the pace is not super fast, it is still constant enough to keep the reader interested in the story. There is enough adventure, social comments, humor and thought-provoking moments, even some really scary ones, that makes the narrative colorful and beautiful. It is Africa through another female eye, addressing a Wilbur Smith adventure with a touch of Indiana Jones thrown in. It also contains similar elements as Caleb's Crossing, written by Geraldine Brooks.

The detailed book is beautifully written, the characters human with a dollop of mysticism and fairy tale slightly mixed in. The descriptions in the book are well done. The inclusion of the fauna and flora, and very well executed, capture the spirit of magical Africa excellently. There were scenes in the book that had me looking for a safer place on my bed! Overall I enjoyed the book! I am sure it will delight many more fans of African books. It is definitely a good read. Great penmanship! The under-current of the book is gentle, kind, but also sparky and defiant. Humor lightens many moments and the issue of Christianity used as a tool, rather than a conviction/belief are illustrated very well. However, this journey will change his outlook on life and severely test everything he ever believed in...

Amazing and life changing! A MUST read!

What can I say about this book? Eric Butterworth was a legend in the Unity movement. He was a Unity minister for many, many years. For those of you not familiar with Unity, this is not a problem. You can still glean so much knowledge and advice from this book. The insights and Truth that is found in these pages will change your life! This book really speaks to the true nature of Jesus the Christ and who he really was. What is Christ Consciousness? And what are princples of Truth? What does the Bible say about reincarnation? Past lives? How do we live to our true, full and glorious potential? All these questions are answered in this book. This book really helps us to 'come up higher' and listen to that 'still, small voice' inside us. It teaches us that all God wants for us is ultimate good! It teaches us about Divine Order and how God is constantly working with us to help us reach our highest good! Oprah has read this book and was moved. Maya Angelou writes a beatiful preface, calling Butterworth her mentor and spiritual teacher. Even if you have never heard of Unity, don't let that discourage you from reading this book. Who knows? Maybe you'll be more interested in Unity after this book and want to learn more! This is truly a life-changing book and has changed the way I think about our brother and way-shower, Jesus. This is a must read!

Discover The Power Within You

Eric Butterworth's book Discover The Power Within You is fantastic! It lifts the veil of mystery from the spiritual experience. His message is simple and clearly stated, that if we will just excercise the power we all have in us by going within and communing with God, then we will no longer have discord in our lives. It is one of the most profound and moving books that I have ever read. I highly recommend it for anyone who is willing to take personal responsibility for their lives and wishes to co-create with God. Butterworth brings forth Jesus' beautiful message that we are all Gods (John 10:34) - not one more special or powerful than another. We need simply to WAKE UP! and recognize our own innate divinity.

A Unity Classic

This motivational, inspirational, spiritual, enlightening and mind expanding book was written about "What did Jesus really teach?" It is based on the teachings of Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, founders of the Unity Movement, and "Lessons in Truth" by Emilie Cady. Although anyone from any religious background can practice the Unity principles, the interpretation of Bible and Jesus's teachings in this book and "Lessons in Truth" are quite different than mainstream Christianity.

It is interesting that when I checked the reviews, there were two people who gave one star to this book. The first person didn't like it because "it was too religious" and the other one claimed "there was not enough religion in it." Unity is called "spirituality without dogma" and the Unity publications are highly motivational writings intertwined with metaphysical Christianity. Unity principles, also the content of this book, are as follow:

1. God is love, all good and the only source of our prosperity (Prosperity includes our emotional, mental, and spiritual as well as physical needs). He is omnipotent, omniscience and omnipresent.
2. Humans are made in God's image. Therefore, we all have Holy Spirit living in us.( the Divinity of Man)
3. What we dwell on is what we bring more of in our lives. Positive thinking brings positive results. (Energy flows where mind goes)
4. In order to be healthy mentally, physically and spiritually, we need to be connected to our Creator with regular prayer.
5. Affirmative prayer (Instead of pleading and bargaining with God, being grateful and thanking God for the answered prayer before it is answered) brings positive results.

If you are working on personal-growth and spiritual enlightenment, this is the book for you. However if you take Bible literally and think your way is the only way to God, this book may offend you. I have learned a lot from reading this book including the following :

Jesus was not born on December 25 in the beginning year of the Christian calendar but in August in 4 B.C.
The Council of Necaea was called by Constantine in A.D. 325 to determine a definition of God acceptable to all, " like union-management negotiation" to secure political unity. After "a bitter struggle", God was made three persons: Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The doctrine of "original sin" did not come from Jesus' teachings but a concept created as a reaction to "Gnostic Christians"
According to the recorded history, early Christians taught reincarnation as a doctrine of the church until the Council of Constantinople in A.D. 325. (St. Francis of Assisi and St. Augustine)

There are also very entertaining sections in the book such as "What was Jesus's last name?", "Was Jesus a Christian?", "Did Jesus intend to start a new religion named for Himself?", and "Is God a Christian?" as well as the thought provoking chapter: "In Defense of Judas." If you like this book, you will love "Lessons in Truth" by Emilie Cady, better yet "Complete Works of Emilie Cady".

About the Author

Professor Ernst qualified as a physician in Germany where he also completed his MD and PhD theses. He was Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at Hannover Medical School (Germany) and Head of the PMR Department at the University of Vienna (Austria). He came to the University of Exeter in 1993 to establish the first Chair in Complementary Medicine. He is founder/Editor-in-Chief of two medical journals (FACT ('Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies') and 'Perfusion'). His work has been awarded with 13 scientific prizes/awards and two Visiting Professorships. He served on the 'Medicines Commission' of the British 'Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency' (1994 - 2005) and on the 'Scientific Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products' of the 'Irish Medicines Board'. In 1999 he took British nationality. Publications: >1000 papers in the peer-reviewed literature, 39 books (translated into 5 5 languages). About five hundred invited international lectures. Dr Pittler is a physician and deputy director of Complementary Medicine at the Peninsula Medical School of the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth. He holds an MD in Applied Physiology from the University of Freiburg, Germany and a PhD in Medical Sciences from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, UK. He is founding associate editor of the review journal FACT - Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies and co-editor of 4 books including the desktop guide to complementary medicine (Mosby/Elsevier), numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. Barbara Wider, MA (Exeter, UK), Staatsexamen (Freiburg, Germany) is a Research Fellow in Complementary Medicine at the Peninsula Medical School, Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, UK. With a background in humanities, earth sciences and European studies, Barbara studied at the Universities of Freiburg (Germany), Montpellier (France) and Exeter (UK) and worked as an assistant researcher and tutor in Germany and France before joining the Complementary Medicine group in Exeter in 1996. She is co-author/editor of three books including the Desktop Guide to Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Elsevier, 2006), several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. Barbara also edits the journal FACT (Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies), a quarterly review journal of complementary medicine research.

This has always been a very fine book because of its sensible and consistent format

This has always been a very fine book because of its sensible and consistent format. HOWEVER, it has now become an absolutely horrific book full of disinformation, dated information, and omitted information, primarily because of the advances in genomics. For example, the write-up on turmeric is now moronic where once it was good. Solution: publishers need to pay for a completely revised edition or, if they have tried to get the writers to do it, and the writers are still fully functional in their professions, then shame on them. But I suspect it's a publisher's problem. So vote with your pocketbook: don't even consider this handbook; I once loved it; I now despise it as a rip-off!
